Webb Simpson surprises with his first US Open victory, Tiger Woods fails to make a comeback!
Webb Simpson has finally grasped his first major championship and has stood out from the all-star US Open.
The 26-year-old American dominated the entire tournament with consistent precision play and excellent strokes. Simpson nailed 4 birdies that flew him up the rank at the scoreboard and got him the prestigious US Open title.
The US Open champion concluded the day as ‘cool’ and seemed pleased with his performance.
“It was just a cool day, I had a peace all day. I knew it was going to be a tough day — I probably prayed more the last three holes than I've ever done in my life,” said the champion.
It was tough for the 26-year-old, as he kept waiting for Jim Furyk’s play to end. The latter was behind the leader by six points. Then came the birdies and Simpson took the lead at the final scoreboard.
“That was nerve-wracking, I know what kind of players they are. They've won majors, I expected them to do well coming in,” said Simpson.
The most disappointing player in the US Open was Tiger Woods. This man entered the tournament with all the right vibes and put up a good show in his early rounds.
His form after the Memorial win has been impressive but somehow, he could not get the score he sought for in his final round at the US Open.
He seemed miserable while he struck two bogeys, followed by a double bogey that eventually ended with a disappointing 73.
It has been 4 years now since Woods won his last major, the 2008 US Open. The former world number one was thought to make a comeback at this year’s US Open but he failed to do so.
Big names have been failures at this year’s US Open. Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood are a few names that made early exits.
Times have changed in the world of golf, as young blood has been dominant over the experienced. Simpson is among the upcoming leaders of golf and made it pretty clear with his astonishing win at the Olympic Club.
