Webb Simpson wins the Deutsche Bank Championship on FedExCup Playoffs – Golf news
Webb Simpson, the 26-year-old Wyndham Championship winner, pulled in one of the finest show of his life when he birdied the two Playoff holes to win his second event on the PGA Tour, the Deutsche Bank Championship, on Monday, September 5.
The final round of the second leg of FedExCup Playoffs was played on the windy TPC Boston North of Massachusetts, while a Labour Day holiday ensured a massive turn out of fans and spectators who cheered their favourites throughout the 18-hole stretch.
Chez Reavie, who qualified to participate in the current season via a medical exemption, probably had the most unfortunate day of his career when he threw away a one shot lead on the 18th hole, giving Simpson a chance to stage a Playoff. Simpson
looked in splendid form from the start of the day, carding four birdies and an eagle at par-five, 7th, on his front nine. He dropped just one shot at par-four, 10th, finishing for a six-under, 65, good enough to lock Reavie in a Playoff.
Simpson said, “I told somebody early this week that I feel like next time I was in contention, it'll be a lot easier than Greensboro. And it wasn't that way at all. It was just as hard. The shots and the putts were just as hard. I think it helped calm me
down a little, but it was like I had never won a golf tournament before.”
Reavie, who remained bogey-free for the whole day and looked as if he will be running away with the title, fell for a dreadful bogey on the final hole to end up in a tie with Simpson at the summit.
Reavie birdied the first Playoff along with Simpson, which was played on the 18th, but could not pull in an equally splendid show on the next playoff hole played on the 17th. While Reavie even-parred the 17th, Simpson could
not stop himself birdying the hole yet again to win the title.
Reavie said, “Unfortunately, my wedge didn't quite work out. But all in all on the day, I played fantastic.”
With this mammoth win on the second leg of the lucrative FedExCup Playoffs Championship, Simpson has not only soared to Number 14 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), but has surged to number one on the FedExCup Rankings and booked a place in the
upcoming Presidents Cup.
A group of three players including Luke Donald, Brandt Snedeker and Jason Day finished for a joint second, trailing the leaders by two shots. Bubba Watson, the overnight leader, fell for a devastating 74 on the final day, finishing for a disappointing joint
16th alongside Robert Karlsson, Ernie Els, Steve Marino and Zach Johnson.
Top-70 players from the Deutsche Bank Championship will now move to the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, while the BMW Championship is scheduled this week at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
