Mark Weber, who led the Formula 1 season in 2010 for the most of the races, revealed in his book that he sustained an injury with four races to go. He had a shoulder injury just when he was in lead before the Japanese Grand Prix. However, the Red Bull racing
driver doesn’t blame the injury for the title loss.
When Webber had the injury, he was 11 points ahead of the Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso and was 21 points clear of team-mate Sebastian Vettel who eventually went on to become the youngest Formula 1 Champion in history. At the end of the season, Webber ended
up 14 points behind his team-mate Sebastian Vettel in third place.
Webber kept the injury secret and didn’t reveal about it to anyone apart from a couple of friends close to him. He claims that he required pain killers before the Japanese and Korean Grand Prix’s to keep the pain away. He didn’t even inform the team Principal
Christian Horner about the injury he had. His trainer Roger Cleary, who is very close to him know about the injury and the other one who knew about it was FIA chief medical officer, Gary Hartstein.
Telling the details of the accident in his book, Webber stated that he was on a mountain bike with a friend in Suzuka, Japan. Suddenly, his friend crashed in-front of him and he had nowhere to go. The accident took place one week before the race in Suzuka.
The accident caused him a fractured shoulder which is generally known as the skier’s fracture.
This is not the first time that Webber has been involved in a mountain bike accident. Last time he was on a mountain bike was back in Tasmania in 2008. He also suffered an accident back then and suffered injuries. He broke his leg and also injured his shoulder
on that occasion. Webber said that he could have avoided the accident had he not been in Japan one week before the race.
After the injury, Webber had to race in Japan which is physically a very demanding track. Webber was lucky enough to escape the qualifying due to a storm. After that he went in the race with some injections and that helped him to finish the race without
any problems.
After the race in Japan, the driver moved to Korea for the inaugural race at the new Korean track. He had a bad outing and lost his control in the race, crashing out of the race. His team-mate Sebastian Vettel was also unable to complete the race and both
the Red Bull drivers ended the race without a single point. This saw Fernando Alonso winning the race and getting into the championship lead.
However, Webber finished second to his team-mate in the race in Brazil and finally moved into the last race at Abu Dhabi. The race proved to be a major disappointment for Webber as he ended up eighth and his team-mate became the champion by winning the second
consecutive race.
Webber won the Gold Star Award at the British Racing Driver’s club this past Monday in an award ceremony in London. He was announced as the winner of this award last month.
