Mark Webber will win, says Alan Jones
Australian Alan Jones has backed up compatriot Mark Webber of Red Bull to take the Formula One 2010 championship title, sources say. The 1980 world champion stated that Webber’s calm mental capacity would
enable him to hold back dangerous rivals such as McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, and team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Jones told AAP, “I think if it gets down to a bit of a head game I'll back Mark every time. Mark's come up the hard way, he's been through some uncompetitive teams, he's had a few bits and pieces thrown
at him where Vettel hasn't and if it gets down to mind games, I think Mark's much better to deal with it than Vettel is.”
And Jones’ comment ring true, given that the 23-year-old Vettel has claimed only two victories in his seven pole positions this season. The German talent has fallen into error a few times as well, infamously
causing other drivers to crash out and usher in safety car periods and hefty penalties.
Webber, on the other hand, has proven that he can keep a level head when facing race pressure, and this mentality has enabled him to soar to four wins this season. Currently sitting at the top of the driver’s
championship with 187 points, Webber has five races to defend his lead, and is on his way to becoming the first Australian in 30 years to claim the coveted prize. Given that it will also be his first F1 crown if he wins, Webber carries a great deal of expectation
on his shoulders. It will be crucial to maintain composure in the remaining tournaments.
“I think the main thing is not to think about it [the Championship] too much,'' advised Jones.
''Not to dwell on it, and not to put undue pressure on himself. He's just got to take each race as it comes along and if he continues to do exactly what he's been doing, he won't have a problem.”
Of course Jones's endorsement could put all the more pressure on Webber, but so far Webber's always been up for the challenge. Webber will hit the track to continue his possibly victorious campaign in
Singapore on 24 September.
