  1. Yahoo and youtube are ok, but don't click on their ads

    Combine the two above advice:

Don't do stupid stuff: don't click on links unless you trust the poster of the links, don't click on banner ads, and don't allow your computer to download something you didn't specifically ask for.  The best rule is not "websites that have viruses" but rather assume most websites have viruses and only go to ones that you trust.  This is advice for pretty much everything on the web.  Just because you have AV doesn't mean you should take risks.

If you don't trust the users of your computer: go to www.download.com and download new antivirus.  I use avast! it's free and works pretty well.

Some other tips in the don't be stupid category: Use mozilla firefox w/ adblock plus (some also say noscript, but I found noscript annoying).  When I go to a website w/ internet explorer, I get the virus warning, but not when I use mozilla.

ETA: If you're willing to pay for AV, but just don't have time, it's generally agreed upon that nod32 is the tops:

  2. Just don't click on any ads that sound too good to be true such as, "Shoot the pink iPhone to get it." Don't go to any stray web sites and Yahoo tells you if there is a potentially harmful site. I've had my computer for several months and it hasn't gotten a virus.

  3. I you reboot the computer and the AV software isn't on, then you already have a virus, as it's disabled your AV software.  If you have AVG or Avaste (both are free, which isn't really a good thing) then many viruses have been known to sneak by and disable the AV software.

If your AV software simple is "out of date" and isn't getting new definitions, it's not a big deal right now, as the old definitions are still active but the sooner you get new AV software the better.

I've written a short guide to getting a bullet proof security.  If you just follow step 3 about Microsoft's DropMyRights tool and run it on your browser, it will make new virus infections impossible.
