  1. This isn't a glorified promotion really, but I do swear by this website, as it is a great source for anything cake related, and specifically you will find answers to planning a fall wedding cake etc. Join for free (no giving out tons of personal information required) www.cakecentral.com - it is a meeting place for amateur and professional cake decorators alike, as well as for prospective brides and grooms and other potential cake customers, to ask questions, answer, share ideas, share photos of cakes done - including cakes that are all sorted by category, sharing recipes etc.

You can for instance create a forum post specifically mentioning where you live and are there any decorators in that area? Look in the wedding album under cakes by color theme, or just look at any other cake folders. Send a private message to someone who you want to ask a question of, or maybe you found they are in your area and you want to ask their business.

The custom cake decorator has two pricing issues- one, they do not, as the previous poster mentioned, have overhead costs, however, two, they do not have the bonus of shopping bulk and commercial large quantities. They are also designing a custom cake, which is not going to necessarily run you 'cheap'  - if you're really looking for cheap cheap then cheap quality is what you will get. You said the cake is not the most important part, nonetheless, you will have photos taken next to the cake /cutting, and it will be on display, as well as eaten, so you want to make sure it tastes great- most importantly,  but also looks beautiful. This doesn't have to run you in the big numbers of course, just shop around and don't  be shocked if Costco can run you a sheet cake for 20 dollars and you can't figure out why the local custom decorator charges 70 for handmade gumpaste all leaves etc.

By the way, you want to ask the decorator to make the leaves in fondant, chocolate fondant, or flavoured marshmallow fondant, as gumpaste is 'edible' but tastes horrible.

I think your fall theme will look gorgeous!

    Good luck and congrats!

  2. my mother has made wedding cakes for as long as i can remember. my recommendation is to find an individual who can do what you want. They don't have the overhead that a bakery will have. my mother doesn't use gum paste or fondant due to the taste. but if thats what you want i'm sure some individual can do it for you. get the word out and find someone who will not rip you off for a cake.
