Have any of you ever been sized for a wedding gown from: alycedesigns.com? I am livid. I was measured as a size 4; I begged my clerk to order me a size 6 b/c I am top heavy (35 inch chest). I went to pick it up last night and I can't zipper the thing!!! I am 5'2 and 108 lbs soaking wet, you mean to tell me I can't fit in their size six? What gives??

  1. a) it's called vanity sizing. I'm normally a 14, my wedding dress is a 12, I'm an 8 at Mark's Work Wearhouse and a 5 at Reitman's. They think you're happier with a smaller number.

    b) what gives is either incompetence (doesn't measure properly) or else a scam to do more complicated alterations. If you didn't sign off agreeing to the size you probably have grounds for a complaint - I got shown the size chart and had to sign to approve the size they were ordering for me. In most circumstances they are supposed to order the size to fit your largest measurement, as it's easy to take something in to fit the smaller measurements. It sounds like the clerk used the wrong sizing chart (one for a different designer). See above for why someone would have smaller sizes.

  2. Measuring for a dress is a nightmare.  I did it last week when I was ordering my dress.  I have a pronounced hourglass figure which has been horrible for dress shopping.  According to the size chart I need a 16-18 for my bust and a 10 for my waist.  What's up with that?  It's hard to figure out what to do in those situations.

If they measured you and you can't fit when they ordered a larger size than what they measured, I would raise heck and tell them if they can't measure correctly then they are going to pay to get the right size in for you.

  3. Well my Saison Blanche Couture gown is a size 14 and I wear a size 10 and because I am not top heavy the top  is  too big I need major alterations. The place where you ordered your dress should have had a sample for you to try on. Try altering the dress to a corset style and remove the zipper. Because you are 5"2" you may have to remove length use that to complete the corset. I understand how you feel.

  4. Crazy! You know if you told the clerk to get you a size 6, now when you go back you shouldn't have to pay for alterations! I would let them know that you should be able to exchange it for a size 6 - no questions asked! Why would the clerk not give you what you asked for!!! I would be P Oed!

  5. Yeah, wedding dress sizes can be crazy small- I wear a dress size 6 normally, but I'm probably like a 10 in those Alyce dresses.  Well, don't worry- every manufacturer has a different sizing pattern.  Look at me- I wear a size 4 in Express jeans, a 6 in most dresses and pants, a Small at New York and Company, a Medium at most stores, and (gasp!) I barely fit in a Large at Forever 21.  It's not you- it's their sizing system.  Evening gowns, especially wedding gowns, are known for running really small, but I'm surprised that the clerk didn't take that into account and order you a size 8- she obviously doesn't know her products.  Well, don't fret- you can get it let out, either at the bridal shop or at another tailor.  It's probably because most wedding gowns are made overseas and their sizing systems are different.

  6. take it back and have them measure you again.  there's no reason they measured you at a 4 and you can't wear a 6.  and raise h**l!

  7. This is true of almost all wedding gown designers. It doesn't have anything to do with you - their sizes just run in a completely different way (read: tiny). So don't worry about the number, just get the size that fits.
