Wedding Menu... opinions?

I'm have a low-key kind of reception with food as a buffet sort of deal.. it saves money and it's less work for me!!

I'm thinking of the following items for my buffet

Lasagna

Roasted Italian Chicken

Roast Beef Brisket

Mashed Potatoes

Garden Salad

Crackers with Dip

Biscuits with butter

Egg rolls (homemade!)

Beef Stroganoff

Fried Rice

Peppered Chicken

And of course, obviously things like pop, liquor, champagne, cake, coffee, etc..

It's not a theme, just items we really like.. After the ceremony we'll have an intermission type deal, then down the street from the church is a park where we're having the reception, indoor the church fellowship hall, if it rains, but it better not! XD

I also need to think of a vegetarian meal for my sister, she's coming out for my wedding and she doesn't eat any meat. Being a non-vegetarian, I have no idea what a good vegetarian entree would be?

  1. your menu is all over the place - consider making it more cohesive in terms of tastes.  i would go with beef & either italian or asian dishes along side - not both.

Be wary of anything tomato or sauce based that could potentially stain clothes (ie lasagna / beef stroganoff).

for any vegetarians - tofu/ egg in fried rice, a bean salad, seeds/ nuts to sprinkle on garden salad, a pilaf or salad made of quino or amaranth offers a protien, a cheese tray, hummus.

  2. i'm a vegetarian so i hope i'm of assistance here....

i would go for a vegetable lasagna... a lot of people who eat meat also really like this and will even choose it to eat.  so you won't have to worry about your sister being the only one who eats it!  if your making it yourself it's simple too- just put veggies in instead of the meat layer (esp. spinach)

how about eggplant parm?  another favorite of vegetarians and meat eaters as well.

i don't know how "simple" it is to make it, but at the last wedding i went to i was served polenta.  it was delicious. came with grilled veggies and whatever the sauce on it was so good. i'd have no idea how to make it thoguh if your doing it yourself.

there's always pasta, but as everyone else is getting lots of options and food it sucks to just have a bowl of noodles and sauce.  or plain vegetables and a potato.  i would strongly suggest one of the first 2 options and i think it will go over well!

  3. I think that everything that you have on the menu sounds really good. Although if you wanted to save some time and money you can just go with the Italian Chicken rather than two chicken dishes - but it's up to you.

For your sister you could offer a pasta dish. You can make the lasagna vegetarian and you can also offer some baked ziti, spaghetti marina, fettuccine alfredo - pasta dishes are always nice. Can't go wrong with that. For our vegetarian meal we offered our guests pasta primevera.

Sounds like you have a lot of food to please all people. I would definitely be happy with that menu if I were a guest.

  4. That menu looks great! There's nothing worse than a low-key wedding reception with fancy foods no one wants to eat. Yum to the homemade egg rolls!

My fiance is a vegetarian, so I'm very familiar with veggie entrees. If you could, make the lasagne vegetarian. It usually just involves using regular marinara instead of meat sauce and adding zucchini and such to the layers. It's really tasty, and you won't have to create a special meal for her.

There's always pasta stir frys, which my fiance eats a lot. Pasta, veggies, any sauce you want. You could also add some tofu to it as well, if she likes it.

    Hope that helps!

  5. I am surprised because your menu looks exactly like my friends buffet menu from a couple weeks ago. Let me tell you, it was one of the best wedding dinners I've EVER had. Yes, a little unconventional (so is the friend) but it was delicious. I would maybe add a side or two (pasta salad, veggie tray, fruit bowl) since it seems a little heavy on entrees.

Vegetarian options: vegetarian lasagna, pasta (no meat in the sauce), morningstar or boca brats/burgers - better yet, just ask your sister for a dish option or two

Quick question though to prevent you from an issue: are you sure you're allowed to have alcohol in the park?? Just asking because a lot of the parks in my town won't allow it.

Otherwise it sounds like a great day!

  6. I think this menu is great. For my wedding me and my sweetheart want to serve comfort food as well. I agree that it's very affordable and you get to eat what you love.
