I think that long term and fashion wise white gold or platinum is the best idea. 90% of the rings I have seen lately are white gold.

That having been said, I love yellow gold. That is what my ring is going to be. Get what you like.

Real gold, be it yellow or white, doesn't tarnish! If it's discolored, I'd have it checked. Gold-plating will tarnish, not solid gold;

Fashion doesn't matter.What matters is; What do you like? Yellow gold looks better on skin that will tan(95% of the world's population). For pale, translucent skin looks nice with white gold. There's also the matter of the stone. A white diamond goes with everything. Emeralds and rubies look better with yellow gold, blue sapphires or tourmalines with white as a rule. Yellow diamonds actually look great with either, depending on how you want the stone to appear.

I don't think either one is really a fashion trend that goes in or out of style.  It is really what you prefer.

I dislike the look of yellow gold so I only wear white gold or sterling silver.  My engagement ring is white gold and my wedding band is actually sterling silver with a platinum coating (its all the same color).

I love yellow gold the best, and pink gold is very beautiful... white gold is nice but everyone has it and its starting to look cheap. Yellow gold is a bit more expensive if your getting the real thing but it always has a classic look to it... Good luck!

All metals are fine for the long term get a higher carot count for strength, it depends on what you wear in normal jewellery. W're having white gold for our rings, We wanted platium but the price is so high at the mo its not worth it.

My partner was a manager in a jewellers he said white gold is just normal gold,treated or sprayed with something.the colour will eventually wear.he says go for platinum if you want white gold

Fashion wise, it is your ring and you will love it no matter what color it is. White gold/ platinum is popular right now, but 15 years ago it was only yellow, and that is just in the US. So go with what you like. I prefer the white metals, although I am a big fan of pink gold as well. Hey be different and go for two tone! Here are some rings I really like:

I think for long term fashion wise yellow is best. White Gold has just become popular is recent years and actually will fade back out. It has before but yellow is a long standing classic.

I also prefer yellow gold though, I think white gold looks like nothing more than silver in my opinion.

I wouldn't make this decision based on fashion.  

In any case, my grandmother wore her white gold engagement ring for more than 50 years and I wore it another 10 before it was damaged (had to have it cut off when I had a severe swelling problem).  It's a more antique setting, but exactly what I like.  People still like it.  I actually found a similar setting, so my guy is getting that for me.

I think long term I would go with yellow, it's the classic metal for wedding rings. I have a white gold ring and I just don't think it holds up as well as yellow gold.

I think fashion changes, but I have always liked white gold over yellow gold. My engagement ring is platinum.

Edit: A cheaper alternative to platinum is Palladium, which is an alloy, but almost as strong, I believe.

I love platinum and so all my friends do. Even though it costs a little more than white gold but it's very in right now and in the long term fashion wise. Platinum has the better look and a lot more elegant than white gold. If you are debating between the white gold or yellow gold for the engagement and wedding ring; I would go with your girl friend style; if she always wears yellow gold jewelry then you should  go with yellow gold since it will match with all of her earings and necklace. If she likes to wear more white gold then platinum or white gold would be your best bet. So  pay a little more attention on her style then you will know what to get her and she will be very happy.

Go for platinum, I am, I already have a platinum engagement ring and the colour of the metal is awesome.

Its has a kind of bluey tinge to it in the light, I love it.

We thought about two tone rings too and if you decided to do that I would not bother with the re dipping, I think this would be hard to get done.

Platinum is the most precious of all metals and is the hardest too.

dont worry about your ring going out of fashion, just make sure that the ring you choose is the one that you love the most.

i have chosen a white gold ring because normally i only wear silver jewellery. i dont like yellow gold as it reminds me of "granny" jewellery!! lol

personally i think that different skin tones suit different colours of jewellery. find one that looks good on you!
