Question:

Wedding cake disaster?

I made a wedding cake for a co-worker and when I delivered to hall, no AC and frosting kept sliding off. I fixed the problems with icing and when I left all was good. I asked owner of hall to turn AC lower to cool the hall and avoid any more mishaps, but he said it was on. The next day I called to find out how it went and was told that what continued to happen to the cake was not good. She said cake tasted good just the appearance was not good. Now wants money back. I don't want to have a problem at work so what should I do?

  1. Unfortunately wedding cake is mostly there for the appearance of the thing, even more unfortunately you work with this person and can not simply ignore them. If the cake was fine when you delivered it and you delivered it when and where you had agreed to; you are not responsible for the conditions in which it was kept afterwards..that was up to the owner of the hall if he had agreed to take receipt of the cake since by doing so he had tacitly agreed to keep it safe.

But...you do work with this person...make a gesture of goodwill..after explaining that you do not acknowledge responsibility for what happened after the cake left your care..offer her a part of the money back, not cutting into your own costs..or make her a smaller version of the cake to share with close friends after the honeymoon. In future, take a picture of each cake you make when you deliver it..on the table that the buyer places it on, tell them that it is simply for your own records and to show other clients and that you did not take the picture at home as you knew the cake would be better displayed by them.

  2. offer to refund 1/2 the price of the cake..obvsiously they still ate it..she said the cake was good...that should handle it

  3. Selena had a great answer!   Hope it all works out for you.

  4. You did your part and cannot control the AC at the hall, tell her you did ask them to turn the AC lower and it is not your fault that the appearance of the cake suffered.  Tell her you will give her a refund if she returns the cake :)
