Wedding cake ribbon?

I'm doing ribbon around the bottom of my wedding cake similar to: http://www.apieceofcake.com.au/images/wedding/wedding_cake_roses_ribbon_140.jpg

Can I use regular ribbon? or is their a special kind? My main concern is the ribbon turning colors from soaking up the oil...

  1. your baker or caterer should know how to do this.  don't worry your pretty little head with details like this, that's why you pay other people.

  2. you can use regular ribbon...it suppose fade or bleed onto the icing.

  3. Regular ribbon should work fine, especially if it's laid over fondant like in the picture (fondant is harder and not oily/moist, so the colour will not bleed, etc).

It looks like the ribbon used is a sheer organza type ribbon.  Look at http://www.save-on-crafts.com/, they have tons of ribbon (inclusing sheer organza) at that website really cheap.  Ribbon section: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/ribbonstul...

You could also try a grosgrain ribbon, it has a bit of texture that will stick better to the icing.

    Good Luck!

  4. Ribbon is not too expensive.  You could find a type that you like and do a test-run.  Use the same frosting and everything, just make a cupcake instead of the whole thing to see what happens.

My cake is going to have ribbon too.  IWe are having butter cream frosting.  The bakery told me to pick out any ribbon I like, but not the kind with the wire.

    Good luck!  Beautiful cake BTW!

  5. I would say you could use regular ribbon but usually it's made out of fondant, which is edible.

Fondant can be hard to work with but have her practice a few times. You can make fondant yourself or you can buy pre-made sheets in different colors... you have to check around.

    Good luck!

  6. Michael's craft stores sell Wilton cake baking supplies and teach wedding cake classes.  Maybe you can ask them.  Or go to a bakery and see if they will tell you.  It's a great idea, don't give it up.  I just photographed a wedding where the bride had navy blue ribbon on her dress, and the cake was the same.  It made a really beautiful photo of her cutting the cake- her dress matched the cake.  It was wonderful.

  7. I was going to suggest the same thing Mrs. D did.  Whatever ribbon you like, do a test run with some frosting.  I don't think, you will have a problem though, people use ribbon all the time.

  8. I am cutting a piece of wax paper slightly smaller than the ribbon which I will wrap around the bottom first, then the ribbon for the very same reason.

  9. Why don't you call up a few local bakeries and ask? I'm sure they would be happy to explain, and to tell you where you can buy it.
