  1. Fish are difficult because they are living things.  They can die in the bowl very easily and no one wants to see a dead fish as a wedding centerpiece.

  2. I don't know about putting the candle in the bowl with the fish, I suppose it probably would work okay.  If that's what you want to do, I'd do a test run before purchasing all the bowls, betas or candles.

If necessary you could get a taller fishbowl shaped bowl that you can set inside of a shallower glass dish, have the fish in the fishbowl and have floating candles in the shallow dish around it.  Or just do the fish bowl (or whatever shape bowl you're using) and then have tea lights around the outside on the table.

I don't think you have to use betas, but I think that's the most common.  Just remember that male betas (the pretty ones) can't be in a bowl with another fish, or they'll kill each other.

  3. are you going to give away the fish at the end of the wedding or keep them?

i would think it would be fine--water cant really catch on fire-it should be fine as long as the candle wax doesnt get in the water

  4. I'm actually doing the same thing for my reception (04-25-09)

I'm using betas since the colors will match and will be so pretty! what I'm doing is getting those larger glass bowls, and putting the glass pebbles (large size) at the bottom and then a floating water lilly on top. then around the bowl (on the table) I am putting 3 small votive candles.

I will just make an announcement during the reception that the center pieces are free to take home. We'll have the little cups the betas come in for easy transport home as well for guests.

And also we are buying about 4-5 extra fish, in case a fish dies. We can just replace him. :)

Hope I helped! And congrats on the wedding!

  5. Fish make for beautiful and unique centerpieces, but there are some potential issues that can come with their usage. You'll want to plan exactly when to purchase them AND when transport them from the bag to the bowl so they don't go into shock and die (no one wants floating fish at their wedding! ew!). Also, you'll want to make sure to be wary of goldfish, as cute as they are, because they p**p-- ALOT. If you want to use goldfish, choose the HUGE ten dollar ones at Petsmart-- they're prettier and p**p less. I would choose betas, if I were you. Floating candles are probably safe for fish, but the fish might nibble at them and then that might become a problem. You'll probably want to use a spath plant on top of a vase of water if you're using betas so they can nibble on the plant roots. Also, many florists use rose bowls or bubble bowls for floral arrangements. They make for perfect fish bowls, with a clean look. Ask if you can rent a certain number of them to save money on purchasing them. Good luck!

  6. I Have The Fish Idea Too.

    =)

I'm Having A Purple & Black Themed Wedding So I'm Going To Have Little Black Goldfish.

I Think Maybe Having Floating Candles Would Be A Bad Idea. Just Incase The Fish Think It's Food & Attempt To Eat It. You Don't Want Dead Fish On Your Wedding Day - Unless It's On The Menu.

Why Not Place Candles Around The Fish Bowl?

That Way It's Then Safe From The Fish & The Flickering Light Would Reflect Off The Fishes Scales.

    That Would Look Very Nice.

    =)

    Good Luck.

  7. I attended a very nice Catholic wedding a couple of years ago and she used gold fish with different sizes and colors and it was very pretty.  The Betas are always nice and go with most colors.

  8. Don't use real fish. It's cruel with all of the guests clinking plates and cutlery on the table around them. Children or people who have had too much to drink will annoy them. Plus you have to look after them once the reception is finished and worry about organizing how to get them home, etc.

Plus there is a chance they could die- not a good look.

If you're really set on fish, use glass fish instead or have the fish on side tables rather than as centerpieces. You can get those ones that float like real fish. Or stick with floating candles.
