Question:

Wedding dress fit/alterations question...?

I bought a strapless wedding dress and wanted to add spaghetti straps to it. I had lost weight from the time I bought it to when I had it altered. When I went to have it altered, the seamstress told me it was too big at the waist. After that we talked about adding straps. Then she measured the hem, etc. At the end, when I asked "what about taking in the waist?" She said that now that I had the spaghetti straps I would not need to have the waist taken in. Is this because strapless needs to be extra tight at the waist to hold the dress up? Or does it sound like she just didn't want to bother? I am wondering if I should take it back in...

  1. !!Be certain whomever takes in the dress knows what they are doing and can get it done in just a couple of days.  you don't want to get it back the day before.

I like the idea of it fitting a little tighter.  You don't want a wardrobe malfunction at an event in which EVERYONE has a camera.  Also it will look more flattering in pictures to accentuate your waist.

  2. If you don't feel it's right then give her a call. Tell her you want to come back in and have the dress fitted at the waist. If she won't do that then have her add the straps and take the dress to someone else. Even with a week away you still have time to get it done. My seamstress altered my dress 3 days before the wedding because I too had lost a lot of weight. It wasn't a big deal and she was great about it. Maybe you should consider taking the dress to someone else. She shouldn't alter the dress to how she thinks it should be - she should alter the way you want it to be; that is what she is getting paid for. If you feel it's not right then speak up and don't back down. You deserve to get what you want and have your wedding dress fit the way you want it to.

  3. your right, the waist doesnt need taking in if it is only a little baggy. if it is overly baggy u will need it taking in. A strapless dress needs to look snug fitting even at the waist for the look to work. however with spaghetti straps it changes the look of the dress slighty and you dont require the snug fit look for the dress to look right.

My brother got married yesterday and we had to put spaghetti straps on 2 of the bridesmaid dresses as there wasnt enough time to take the waists in as we only done the finally fitting on weds.

I would personally just leave the waist as it is, as long as YOU are happy with the way it looks. at the end of the day its your dress you have it how you want. Plus if your like me you will be grateful of the extra room in the dress by the end of the day.

Best wishes for you and your partner on your happy day!!
