Question:

Wedding guest accomodations?

When you attend a wedding where the majority of people invited are from out-of-state, do you expect the bride & groom to block rooms for guests to spend the night if they want?

If the bride & groom sent you a save-the-date that asked you to contact them with your preferences for accomodations so they could block rooms at a discount - would you get back to them if you were planning to attend?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to calculate the # of rooms needed and who wants what type/price of hotel or motel so I don't over-block and end up penalized.

  1. I think you should just pick a median priced place....comfort suites, holiday inn etc and put a block there maybe ten rooms? Then send out that information, don't have guests get back to you.

  2. wow thats awefully nice of u to pay for their stay must be nice to have that kinda dough

  3. We called around to several places, and narrowed the list to 3 that were giving really good deals and then chose based cleanliness, size of rooms, parking etc.  To get the count - I looked at the guest list and did a probability count of who would come from out of state, and then shaved off a couple more (so my 18 rooms went to 15) and that's what I blocked off.  Please don't make your guests think any more than am I coming, how do I get there, what am I wearing and bringing.  If you have a guest who can't afford your choice, there are probably other hotels in the area.  In our family there is one person who won't spend he 89/night but would rather stay in a lesser quality establishment just because it is less expensive.  You can't please everyone but you can still be accommodating to most people.

  4. To the previous poster, you don't pay when you block rooms, you just get the people paying a discount.

Most hotels that I talked to about room blocks will let you block a certain amount without penalty if the people don't show.  The hotel we picked let us block ten without penalty for no shows.

  5. I am reserving blocks of rooms in two different hotels; one higher end but farther from the wedding, one lower end but closer.  This way, people can choose based on their pockets and use the excuse that it is their time frame/personal preference to be closer.  They contact the hotels directly.  I have both hotels on my wedding website.  Neither hotel is asking me to pay in advance; they will automatically cancel any rooms that aren't taken by a month before the wedding.
