Question:

Wedding invitation wording, this is a tough one?

Alright so I want to use the appropriate wording for who is paying for the wedding because I am so thankful to my mother for doing so. However here is the situation: my parents are divorced, my mother is paying for almost all of the wedding with my grandmother (on my mother's side) chipping in for invitation printing and the family brunch the day after, my father as made a point about how he refuses to pay for a thing, and then to make it a little more confusing my mother is getting married tomorrow. So when my mom gave me the money for the wedding she was single but as of tomorrow (my wedding is in May) she will be remarried. How do I word this one?

  1. Just go with traditional wording for the invitation - it's not about who is paying, it's using the parents' names as a matter of respect, and shows which families you and your HTB belong to. You can talk about your grandmother and her special help when you speak at the reception program, giving your thank yous.

    Lisa Marie,

daughter of Frank Green and Helen (Gary) Smith

    and

    Henry David,

son of William and Mary Green,

request the honour of your presence.....

In the example, use your mom's first name, then her new husband's first name in brackets, then whichever surname she is using.

  2. It all depends on how you want to word it.  You can simply say "The honor of your presence is requested at the marriage ceremony of (your name here) and (fiance's name here)."  If your mother is "hosting" the wedding, you can say "(your mother's name) is proud to announce the wedding of her daughter (your name here) to (fiance's name here)."

I would not put the grandmother's name on the invitation, but thank her in the programs and possibly in the toast (if you and your then-husband will be giving one).

    Good luck!

  3. I would put something like:

    Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Jones

request the honour of your presence as their daughter,

    Christina Smith,

Also the daughter of John Smith,

    marries Jim Doe,

son of Mr. & Mrs. John Doe.

That way you are including all parents, but it shows that your father didn't pay for anything. And I would include your new step-dad since by the time you get married, your mom will have been married for awhile.
