  1. The only thing the bride and groom should dictate about their guests' attire is the level of formality - black tie, etc. It is unreasonable for your sister to expect all of her guests to find and purchase new outfits (essentially costumes) for her wedding day. (The bridesmaids are a different story, of course. I'm talking strictly about the guests.) Her theme should be reflected in the decorations, the venue, the music, and the outfits of the wedding party. Guests can dress as they please, so long as it is suitably formal.

Remind her that guests are GUESTS, not a backdrop for her special day.

  2. I have heard of costume parties but not for a wedding. Of course your cousin can do anything she wants but to me, it degrades the wedding and turns it into a lower form of entertainment. A wedding should be a celebration of the bride and groom and there is no need to divert people s attention to vintage hollywood. She should be focusing on her fiance and the marriage to follow, in my estimation

  3. I don't think she should put on the invitation what the theme is or how people should dress. If she chooses her invitations right, it will portray the theme. EX: http://weddings.about.com/gi/dynamic/off...

Maybe have mock movie tickets to bring to the ceremony or reception.

What she means by old hollywood is the 40 and 50's. Yes marilyn monroe is part of that.

Tell her a good idea would be to hire a swing band. She could also hire a dance instructor to teach the guests how to do the lindy hop and the Charleston – perhaps at the rehearsal dinner.

Also: An old art deco movie theater, particularly if it has a large lobby, is a perfect setting. If you don’t have one of these in your town, look for an old-fashioned formal restaurant or supper club, like the 21 Club, or a grand ballroom at a hotel.

SPECIAL TOUCHES: Name the tables after classic Hollywood stars, or romantic movies. Give the bridesmaids high quality feather boas. Consider wearing a feather and rhinestone hair accessory, a la Josephine Baker. If you're renting your dance floor, ask for black and white checkered.
