Question:

Wedge bounce advice?

I carry a pitching wedge and a 54 and 60 wedge. My 54 has 14 degrees of bounce and I struggle hitting short pitches and chip shots with it. It's fine from 90 to 110 yards as I can take a divot. Would I benefit from getting a 54 with reduced bounce?

  1. the more bounce you have the less the club will dig on a firm fairway a club with more bounce will do just that bounce of the turf resulting in a thinned shot on wet or very soft fairway the more bounce will limit the depth of the divot reducing the chance of hitting fat shots I think maybe you problem is more likely in technique on the shorter chips make sure you set up open to the target to let the hips clear on short shots ball position should be ball back of centre and hit down and follow through

  2. One of the biggest reasons people struggle with chipping and pitching is that they try to get behind the ball and scoop it out of the grass. You actually need to come down on the ball at a sharper angle and kind of chop at it. This will get the ball up out of the grass.

Once I learned this techinque, I stopped having trouble with chipping and pitching. Check out the link below for more information on pitching.

  3. On those kinds of tight shots, I actually step down and use my pitching wedge for just those reasons.

So yes, I think you might benefit from a club with reduced bounce.

  4. 14 degrees is virtually impossible to hit from a fairway that much bounce light fluffy sand only . 10 degrees bounce is borderline , for fairways  8 is average  not for use hardpan . go for the 54 reduced bounce tou are prably blading majotity of chips . unless you move ball 4 inches outside back foot . try reduced bounce

  5. Out of high grass around the green, a lot of bounce helps you, but like you a have a Ping sand wedge that I cannot use from the short grass.  I bought a series of wedges with 6-8 degrees of bounce, and love them....never hit them fat.
