Wee Ung, Joyce Leong live up to billing in Mixed Doubles event of Ede Clendinnen Shield tournament
When most of Western Australia’s shuttlers failed to rise on their toes, the twosome of Wee Ung Hii-Joyce Leong saved some honour by winning the Mixed Doubles tie in Ede Clendinnen Shield Sydney on August 27, 2012.
They unseated Guy Gibson and Lei Lei Huang, who were representing NSW Thunder, in just 20 minutes.
They registered a splendid straight-set victory by putting impressive figures of 23-21and 17-21 on the board.
Though, they made it look easy but actually they had to put an extra effort to claim this victory over their superior rivals.
Meanwhile, Guy and Lei also earned great admiration for standing tall to their stature throughout this crucial tie.
The battle heated up straight away in the opening game as both pairs started their campaigns in high spirits.
They geared themselves up and made this a memorable contest with their unimaginable performance.
In the first half of the set, both teams took some time to read their rivals’ strategy but after couple of opening rallies they were so synchronised that they even intercepted each other’s moves even before it was made.
They remained close on the points table until mid-game break and did not allow each other to gain a comfortable advantage.
After the one-minute interval, Wee and Joyce showed their class and made the difference with some uninterrupted points. They maintained same pace in the next couple of rallies and widened the gap in third quarter of the set.
At this stage, Guy and Lei showed some spark but it was not enough to burn down their challengers who finished the opening set with 23-21 score on the board.
However, this first set loss did not enthrall the NSW Thunder players completely as they put great resistance before going down in the following game.
The partnership of Wee and Joyce had to put a laudable effort to overcome their spirited competitors.
Though, they established an immediate advantage but a strong backlash brought them down in the third quarter of the set.
Guy and Lei employed all of their brilliance and narrowed the gap but luck was not on their side as they lost this crucial segment of the battle with 17-21 margin.
