Question:

Weed question for Gardeners

I have a bad weed in my garden called Porch-a-lack-a (sorry don't know how to spell it so just sound it out), this insn't the beautiful flower of the same name, it is the weed. You have to take it out by the root, getting all the stems and toss them in the garbage or burn them. They re-root very easily and quickly and spread out like a spiders web on the ground.

I wondered what anyone else does to get rid of this weed, can it be treated with any chemical or anything more natural? I have it in a few spots really bad and have been pulling it out each day but it still grows.

So if you have any help or suggestions I would love to hear them. Thank you.

  1. I tried everything and finally resorted to chemical warfare.  Otherwise it's a losing battle.  These things will grow through the roots and shoot out in some area you haven't seen yet.

Round out is not strong enough.  You have to get a brush and weed killer.  I put it in a container I bought the hardware store and mix it with water - per the instructions.  I try to wear gloves and cover my face.

  2. first burn it then pour acid over it

  3. Since only a few spots are involved, try covering the soil with a piece of old carpet, felt or sacking.Weigh the covering down to exclude light.

The weed will be unable to manufacture chlorophyll in the absence of natural light, within a few days it'll wither away.

  4. You could try some Round-Up to kill the live plants, and also put down some seed inhibitor to prevent new plants from sprouting and growing.

  5. Isn't this weed amazing??  I always wonder where it comes from...how the seeds end up getting to every bare spot or garden in my yard even though I do a pretty good job of removing it, and I dont see it growing anywhere else on the property.  I like to call it "rubber weed"!  I think is is also called purslane.  It is a pain and very good at surviving even when you pull it out and leave it sitting on the ground without any roots.  The best thing to spray on it is Roundup or similiar...but as you will find, where ever it is, that plant will die, and a new seed will find its way to that bare spot and start growing in a month or so!  I honestly dont think you can ever totally eliminate it unless you remove EVERY single plant from day one that it shows up.  Did you know that it is edible???  Many people eat it in salads.
