How do I rid my lawn of weeds? I have tried the solutions that you hook up to the garden hose and sprayed that. I have also spread fertilizer and the seeds that are supposed to kill wweeds, but the lawn still is crappy. I am not a person who enjoys yard work so I want the most carefree lawn ever. Is it worth paying one of those companies to come out and treat the lawn?

  1. yes if you don't want to do it yourself. If the treatments you have tried have not worked it would be a good idea. Also, try asking someone at Lowes or Home Depot in the garden dept.

  2. Purchase something called Weed and Feed fertilizer.  It is a combination fertilizer and weed killer.  Follow the directions on the bag. You should apply it when the lawn is wet as the product sticks to the leaves of broadleaf weeds.  This should kill most of your weeds in the lawn.

Make sure you mow your lawn on a high mower setting because the shorter you cut your grass the more weeds you will have (generally speaking). When you cut your grass high the grass shades out any weed seeds in the lawn, keeping them from germinating.  Next spring put down what is called a Preventer. This product prevents seeds from germinating. If you have more weeds next spring after applying the preventer then lay down another application of Weed and Feed.  This should rid your yard of any weeds or more than 95% of them. Keep your lawn watered (at least 1 inch per week), fetilized and cut your grass high and you should be mostly weed free and only need to cut your lawn.

I follow this method and my lawn has almost no weeds and all I have to do is cut the grass and some trimming all summer long!  If you follow this method you will be weed free by fall....and then watch next spring as I said above and you will have a low maintnenace lawn.

Note: You may need to lay down another application of Weed and Feed this fall (around October/November) if you find the weeds taking hold again.  If you find the weeds are pretty much taken care of by this fall then just fertilize your lawn in October/November to give your grass a boost for the winter.

Always remember to fertilize at least once in the spring and fall and once in the summer if needed.

I enclosed a picture of my lawn as a testimony to how well this procedure works!

  3. Getting rid of lawn weeds can be frustrating (as you now know). Be careful about what types of weed killers you select, as there are several things to consider.

What type of grass you have and what type of weeds you have are 2 biggies. Some herbicides target broad leaf weeds only and other only narrow leaf weeds. Those that kill narrow leaf (grassy) weeds might also kill your good grass.

Meanwhile, check for temperature requirements. Some weed killers won't work below a certain temp, while others won't work (and may damage/kill your lawn) if the temp is over a certain temp (usually 90 or above).

Additionally, if you use a granular type weed-out, the lawn may need to be wetted first so the granules will adhere to the blades. Otherwise they may just sift down and do nothing. Likewise, if using a liquid, you may need to add a surfactant to the mix to help the liquid stick better. Oh, and usually a single application is not enough.

    Hope that helps!

  4. NO, IT IS NOT WORTH IT!

I hate to say this but a lawn is not carefree. However some good tips are this:

if you have crab grass, put down crab grass killer early in the spring before the crab grass seeds take root or germinate (done by a spreader), secondly, if you have dandelions, try puling them by the stem but if you have neighbors that do not take care of their lawn with dandelions this is a futile effort.

You could put down perennial flower wild seed that will make your entire lawn look like a wild garden.......

Another option is to plant shade trees to minimize the sun bearing down and giving the weeds exactly what they like--a good hot summer day to grow like wildfire! :-))

Any way you look at it though, a good lawn takes work and one thing I did not mention is watering. If you water the lawn seed but have weeds, all watering is for everything in and on your lawn.

    Good luck!

  5. NO!

  6. No, you can do it.

First. Are your weeds mostly "broadleaves"?  That is to say, do they have leaves like: dandelions, clover, etc.?

Second:  Once the weeds are dead, will you have alot of grass remaining?

If the answer is "yes" to both, here's what you do:

    1. Measure the lawn area.  Figure it as a square or rectangle and multiple base x height.  This is your square footage.

2.Go down to Hardware or Garden Center and purchase a bag of Weed 'n Feed.  If you don't own a fertilizer spreader, purchase one of those hand-help jobbers that holds like 3 cups of fertilzer!

3.Have the salesman help you read the label of the bag THEN AND THERE!  Nobody reaDS THE LABEL!    The directions or LABEL will tell you exactly how much product you will need to use to make a PROPER application and actually get the job done.

All weed- n' feed products need to be applied in the early morning dew OR after an irrigation (sprinklers or hose).

The idea is that the fertilizer lands on the wet weeds and the chemical releases.   After 24 hrs. water heavily to wash the fertilizer to the ground.  In 3-4 days the weeds should be dying and the grass should be charging!

REMINDER:  If you spread weed n' feed on your shrubs, you will kill them.  Be careful.

  7. there are loads of ways, digging out the roots of course is hard work and u said u don't really like gardening, a very wise friend told me for dandilions use a pinch of salt on the heads, he said it's amazing, they hate it! of course the other option is to have it re turfed! but it also matters what your neighbours have in thier garden as weeds spread.   good luck.
