Question:

Weeds on lawn?

Could someone please tell me a good way to get rid of weeds on the lawn. We are under a pesticide ban. I have tried digging them up but they keep coming back. I have heard that pouring vinegar on them works.

  1. First thing.

Pesticides have NOTHING to do with getting rid of weeds.  They get rid of BUGS & insects.

    Herbisides gets rid of weeds.

Herbisides includes Weed-Be-Gone, Roundup, and others.

Now if you are banned in using herbisides then make this:

1 cup children's shampoo or liquid dish soap (it removes seed shell protection)

    1 cup hydrogen peroxide

2 tablespoons instant tea (liquid pre-merge controls can also be added to this tonic)

put into a 20 gal hose end sprayer and spray away.

Use it every 7-14 days for 4 treatments.

Then to really zing weeds apply the following tonic in your 20 gal hose end sprayer between 1pm and 3pm on a bright sunny day.

    1 cup liquid dish soap

    1 cup household ammonia

    4 tablespoons instant tea

  2. Vinegar is "non-selective" which means it will kill anything and everything including grass.

Since most weeds send out long tap roots, unless you dig out the entire root (very difficult) the plant can re-grow. There are organic methods, but they usually take 2 or 3 seasons to work effectively.

Anyway, some of the weeds can be attractive.

  3. DO NOT PULL OR DIG UP THE WEEDS ...every time you pull a weed out of the ground you break the root nd it spreads the best thing to do it kill them by using spray ....If you lawn has been taken over by weeds you may have to re-sod, but that that can be expensive, I recommend that you call a lawn expert and ask them if they do free estimates, then try to find out the best solution.

  4. An alternative approach to using herbicides would be to raise lawnmower cutting height so grass grows taller to shade the weeds and mow more often.  Grass can stand the shock of mowing better than most other plants.  You can also water and fertilized grass so they can crowd out weeds.  This method does not work well in shady spots where grass does not grow well.
