Week 11 (7 November) BCS standings revealed
Even after dismantling the previously unblemished Utah Utes in a 47-7 rout, the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs (10-0, 6-0 MWC) remain on the outside looking in. In the latest instalment of the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) standings released
on Sunday 7 November, the Horned Frogs are ranked No. 3 behind No. 1 Oregon (9-0, 6-0 Pac-10) and No. 2 Auburn (10-0, 6-0 SEC).

In the current format of college football’s FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision), the top two teams in the BCS standings at the end of the regular season receive an invite to play for the national championship in the BCS title game. However, as members of the Mountain
West Conference (MWC), the Horned Frogs hope to re-write the history books by becoming the first squad from a non-BCS conference to play for a national title.

If TCU continues its winning ways, it will be the first team in line for national championship consideration should either the No. 1 Ducks or No. 2 Tigers falter in their remaining games. It could potentially happen, as the road for those two schools isn’t
paved with sure wins either.

The Ducks still have to face California and Arizona (currently No. 18), before heading to Corvallis to take on their rivals, the Oregon State Beavers. Auburn, meanwhile, will host the floundering, but upset-minded Georgia Bulldogs before arguably their toughest
test of the season, a 26 November trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium to face their arch-rivals, the Alabama Crimson Tide (currently No. 12).

As such, Gary Patterson remains optimistic about the opportunity his team has to break through and make history. “The bottom line is that they put themselves on a different plateau,” the TCU coach said of his players following Saturday’s marquee victory, according
to The Associated Press.
“They have to finish the season and we can only control what we can control. But I thought they made a statement. Everybody else in the country, when they go into someone else’s house in a big game, they usually end up getting beat,” he said of the prominent
road win.

With just two regular season games left against San Diego State (7-2, 4-1 MWC) and New Mexico (1-8, 1-4 MWC), the Horned Frogs are keeping their fingers crossed, playing for the chance to shock college football’s foundations.
