Week 6 Roundup: The New York Giants
The New York Giants are heading into their 7th week with a 4-2-0 record. They are currently leading the NFC East. The Giants are on a three game winning streak powered by their strong defence and they are showing no signs of faltering just yet.
In the six weeks so far, the Giants have been quite impressive but there are still weaknesses in their side. The Giants won their season opener against Carolina Panthers 31 to 18 but lost the next two games. Panthers have had success against Giants in the
past and the last time they faced each other, Panthers dominated Giants. They beat the Giants 41 against 9 at Giants' home last year.
But that’s past now. The Panthers recently never really had a chance to beat the Giants. Carolina so far has lost all 5 of its regular season games and are placed at the bottom in the league standings. Their defence is ranked the worst in the league while
Giants rank closer to the top. Although, Giants won this year’s game 31 against 18, it is more of a reflection of how poorly the Panthers have been doing instead of how well the Giants have.
The confidence they gained from their first win was lost in their next two games. Giant’s quarterback, Eli Manning went up against his brother, Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Peyton Manning. This season, the Colts have been pretty much the best offensive
side in the league. Indianapolis is currently ranked 8th overall in the league while Giants rank 10th. The Colts’ 27.2 points and 409 yards average is the second best in the league. Indianapolis was the better team and it showed this
as they beat Giants 14 against 38.
Tennessee Titans were next to kick the Giants into the ground, beating them 29-10 in the third week. Statistically, Giants' defence has been one of the best so far this season but with 27.0 points average per game, Titans' offense is always going to be a
challenge. Giants' offense made too many mistakes in that game and the three turnovers made sure that Titans win.
Giants' season was moving backwards. They needed a win, a sign that would say to them that it’s not only the weaker teams in the league that they can beat. Chicago would serve that purpose quite well. By fourth week, Chicago Bears had been undefeated and
were leading NFC North. Usually, Chicago wouldn’t stand along side NFL’s elites but 2010 season had been going their way. Until, they ran into the Giants.
Giants came back stronger than ever against the Bears and their defence was out for blood. Bears' quarterback, Jay Cutler was knocked out after being sacked 9 times in just the first half. The defence allowed a total of 110 yards. Bears scored once in the
game and lost 3 against 17 to the Giants. This win was exactly what the Giants needed in terms of a confidence boast. Their defence had proved that they can do serious damage to any offense they go up against. Cutler knows what the Giants are capable of doing
as well as anyone else since he had to sit out the next Bears' game because of the punishment he received from New York.
After beating, until then unbeaten Chicago Bears, Giants just never looked back. They faced Houston Texans and the defence was still fired up. Manning threw almost a hundred more yards than Texans' quarterback, Matt Schaub. Giants stopped the rush allowing
a league low of just 25 yards in the game to win 34-10. They went on to defeat Detroit Lions with 28 points against 20. The Lions had a lot more yards by the end of the game but appeared undisciplined and couldn’t convert the yards into points against Giants'
defence.
Next week, Giants will go to Dallas to face the Cowboys. At 1-4-0, the Cowboys stand fourth in NFC East and clearly aren’t having the kind of season they would want. Against New York Giants, Dallas are unlikely to break their losing streak. New York are
the hands down favourites.
