Weekend Roundup of Bundesliga - Nov 1st, 2010
In the German Bundesliga, we saw clashes at both the top and bottom of the table.
Teenager Mario Goetze scored one while provided assist for the other as Borussia Dortmund claimed the top spot in Bundesliga with a 2-0 victory over Mainz 05.
The German U-21 international was in inspirational form as he once again showed the world that he is one of the most promising young talents in the country.
Goetze opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a low shot and turned provider in the 67th when he set up Lucas Barrios for the finish.
At the foot of the table, Cologne moved off the bottom with a win over Borussia Monchengladbach while Wolfsburg also continued their rise up the table with a victory over Stuttgart. The loss now sees Stuttgart drop into the bottom three while in another
match, Werder Bremen lost to Nurnberg.
Also moving in the upward direction on Bundesliga table were Frankfurt, who jumped six places and landed into the top four as they came from behind to defeat St Pauli, while Bayer Leverkusen also registered a crucial win over FC Schalke in the League.
After a winless start to the league, Cologne’s fortunes finally turned as a hat trick from Milivoje Novakovic helped his side defeat Hamburg 3-2 at the Rhein Energie Stadion.
Novakovic grabbed goals in the 11th, 29th and 84th minutes to help his side climb out of the relegation zone. Piotr Trochowski and Heung-Min Son scored for Hamburg on the night.
Borussia Monchengladbach dropped to the foot of the table as they were thrashed 3-0 by Kaiserslautern.
Christian Tiffert scored the opening goal at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion in the 71st minute and substitute Adam Nemec added a second in the 82nd minute while Srdan Lakic rounded off the win with a third for Borussia Monchengladbach.
Over at the Weser stadion, two goals from Bosnian hot shot, Edin Dzeko helped Steve McLaren’s Wolfsburg beat Stuttgart.
Dzeko, who is in high demand across the leagues after his impressive performances for his side in recent years, scored in the 6th and 77th minutes to guide his side towards a comfortable win at the weekend.
Frankfurt moved into the top four with a 3-1 win over St. Pauli at the Millerntor Stadion.
St. Pauli took a shock lead early in the game through Carlos Zambrano but comeback goals from Theofanis Gekas, Gerald Asamoah's and Caio ensured that Frankfurt were moving into the top four of the Bundesliga.
Sidney Sam's second-half strike settled the match between FC Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen as Shaclke’s woeful season continues with another dismal defeat.
Sam scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half and although Schalke hit the frame of the goal three times after that but were not good enough to get level in the game as Bayer held on for the crucial win.
Nurnberg leapfrogged Werder Bremen in the league table with a 3-2 win in the league.
Hugo Almeida scored for his side as early as in the fifth minute but Nurnberg came back strong with two goals from Ilkay Gundogan and one from Mehmet Ekici.
Claudio Pizzaro managed to pull one goal back for his side in the 90th minute but it was too little too late as there wasn't enough time to complete a memorable comeback.
