Weekend Trip around Madrid?

I live in Madrid and I'm trying to plan a little weekend getaway...I have limited resources and so I wanted to travel close to the city and maybe stay Friday to Sunday - I thought Toledo but that provides like one afternoon of entertainment. Then I though a combo of Toledo and Aranjuez but it'll be kind of a pain to change locations because we're gunna have use public transport...any suggestions? Am I under selling Toledo?

  1. You are TOTALLY underselling Toledo!  You need to go to the Cathedral, the Church of Santo Tomé, Le Greco's house, Sinágogas de Santa María la Blanca AND el Tránsito - the second has a large museum, you'll want to spend some time in.  You want to walk around the city walls, and take a cab up to the parador, and take photos (or just take in the view) that is El Greco's Vista de Toledo.  There's a little castle on other side of the river fromt the Bridge of Alcántara (I think...look at the Puerta de Bisagra, and turn left...that bridge.)  There's the Alcázar, which is surely open again, and I believe houses a military museum.  If you can find the sword factory, you can probably watch them MAKING some of the best swords in the world.  The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, and THEN you might want to shop.  You should buy Damasquinado work - make sure you are able to actually WATCH someone working, otherwise you can be pretty sure what you are buying was made by machine in China.  And you should pick up some marzipan while you're there...it's their specialty.  Enough for you?  NO?  then cross the street from the Puerta de Bisagra, there's a nice park, where you can sit down and rest (cause you might just be a bit weary) with a nice ice cold lemon granizado, or an horchata. YUMMMM.

Yeah, you should make a whole day of Toledo.  The city is just one huge museum!
