Weemissfrankie to go for leg surgery coming out of the Hollywood Starlet
Unbeaten before the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in three starts including a maiden special weight race, Weemissfrankie, compromised her chances of staying unbeaten throughout the year when she finished third in the Breeders’ Cup competition to a rampant, My Miss Aurelia.
It was true competition at Breeders’ Cup that got the best of Weemissfrankie, but even then she managed a placed finish which itself speaks of her ability and talent. However, the juvenile filly in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet was expected to win keeping in mind her past performances.
There was no horse with the credentials or calibre of My Miss Aurelia in the Starlet lineup, it was bad luck and a condylar fracture to her right front leg which caused her to lose interest.
She suffered the injury at the very beginning of the race where she stumbled badly at the start from post number 1 under Rafael Bejarano in the 1 1/16 mile race.
According to trainer Peter Eurton, the New York bred daughter of Sunriver, out of mare Starinthemeadow by Meadowlake, Weemissfrankie is scheduled to undergo surgery the following day.
“It probably happened when she went to her nose at the start, and probably got worse during the race,” said Eurton. “It didn’t get really bad until she got back to the barn.”
With an injured leg, Weemissfrankie still made the most of the opportunity she had in the Hollywood Starlet against five other fillies and she managed to defeat two almost on three legs.
“She only got beat 2 ¾ lengths on three legs,” said Eurton, praising the filly for her courageous run in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet.
She is definitely out for 4 to 6 months, and after losing the Starlet, Weemissfrankie missed out on the chance to become the second filly to win the Grade 1 Debutante, Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes, and the Hollywood Starlet.
Weemissfrankie has gone on to run in five starts in her debut season for trainer Peter Eurton, and she has landed three out of her five career starts which shot her bankroll up to $559,920.
