Wegmans LPGA Championship: Cheyenne Woods excited to play her first major event as a professional
Cheyenne Woods said that she is quite excited to play the Wegmans LPGA Championship, scheduled to be played from June 7-10, at Locust Hill Country Club, Pittsford, New York.
Cheyenne Woods, a niece of the 14-time grand slam winner Tiger Woods, turned professional in the current season, following her graduation. The 21-year-old star first appeared in the major event in 2009, as an amateur.
This is the first time young Woods is going to play a major tournament as a professional. She recently spoke to the media and answered a range of questions.
Woods said the she is extremely thrilled to play among some of the big names, and will try to prove her worth. At the 2009 event, she failed to make the cut by just four strokes.
However, commentators had appreciated her efforts, as she was playing against experienced contenders.
Woods pointed out that playing as a professional, especially in a major tournament, will definitely be different. However, she said that she is more excited to play the LPGA Championship as a professional than an amateur.
“This is actually my job and my career. I'm really excited to be out here and so thankful that I've had this opportunity to play this week. So I'm excited to have this be my very first pro debut where they had me two years ago,” the young prodigy said.
Woods is playing the LPGA Championship on a sponsor exemption. Moreover, she has also qualified for the upcoming US Women’s Open – something analysts said will give her a much-needed mental boost.
The American golfer said that playing two major tournaments within the span of a few days is going to be a great experience, and she will try to prove her mettle.
“It was awesome. It was very overwhelming, going into The Open qualifier knowing that I did get this spot here was a little bit of pressure. But I was ready, and I was prepared, and just excited to have the opportunity to play the U.S. Open”.
Woods went on to say that she has yet to improve several aspects of her game, but she is focusing more on her ball striking.
