Wei Feng Chong ousts R.M.V. Gurusaidutt in Men’s Singles qualifying round of All England Open
Malaysia’s national back-up player Wei Feng Chong secured a place in Men’s Singles main round after beating India’s R.M.V Gurusaidutt in qualifying round of 2012 All England Premier Super Series in Birmingham, on Tuesday, March 6.
The left-handed Wei Feng, who is World Number 57 at the moment, showed a gutsy performance and won against the higher ranked Gurusaidutt who has been placed at number 39 in the world.
The Malaysian showed a wonderful display of fast and positive badminton and registered his supremacy over the Indian in three games by taking 58 minutes in the court.
The Malaysian started his run against Gurusaidutt in an impressive fashion as he played to his maximum potential and remained successful in setting up a remarkable gap of 11-6 until the one-minute break.
After the break, Gurusaidutt elevated his play by accelerating his speed and managed to level the score by reaching at 13-13.
However, Wei Feng changed his strategy at this stage and again took a wonderful lead. He was flawless in his execution of strokes and eventually bagged the set with a 21-16 score on the board.
In the second game, both shuttlers remained close until 7-7 when Gurusaidutt played attacking badminton and managed an 11-7 lead until the interval.
After the break, the Indian remained on track and reached at 18-8 when Wei Feng stunned everyone by playing to his maximum potential. He scored 10 consecutive points and levelled the score at 18-18.
However, Wei Feng could not continue his smashing run in the ending points and lost the set with a tight margin of 20-22.
In the final set, Malaysian shuttler did not let his Indian rival to control the pace of rallies as he remained dominant from the opening points and set up a wonderful lead of 11-4 until the break.
After the interval, Wei Feng continued his smashing performance by playing to his maximum speed and remained successful in ending the game with a stunning margin of 21-8.
The Malaysian emerged as the winner of this entertaining 58-minute fight with a 21-16, 20-22 and 21-8 score on the board.
