Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng found an impressive start as he stunned the higher ranked Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in Men’s Singles first round at Li Ning Singapore Open Super Series 2012 on Wednesday, June 20, in Singapore.
The World Number 37 Wei Feng, who is un-seeded in the tournament, proved his mettle while playing flawless badminton in the court and overpowered the seventh seeded Taufik, who is currently ranked at number 12 in the world.
The lower ranked Wei Feng showed an incredible improvement in his physical fitness and mental toughness as he was quite determined in the court while playing against his experienced opponent and won the battle in straight games with a reasonable margin.
On the other hand, Taufik continues his quivering run at international stage as he again failed to show his elite skills and crashed out in the opening round of the tournament. The growing age has started to affect over him quite visibly as he is not playing
at his best speed now.
In the first game of this Men’s Singles first round, both men showed their brilliance and remained close as no one could take over the charge of rallies.
They employed powerful smashes and beautiful net shots and pushed each other in all corners. However, both men remained close until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the contest continued in the same thrilling fashion and the score reached at 15-15 when Wei Feng proved his worth by playing attacking shots and managed to win the game with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the following set, the Taufik started his run in a dominating manner in first few rallies but failed to maintain his upper hand in the court as Wei Feng managed to take over the control and managed a small lead of 11-10 until the break.
After the interval, both men continued their progress as a steady pace and reached at 17-17 when Wei Feng unleashed his impressive jumping smashes and managed to win the set with a close score of 21-19.
