Wei Feng Chong tames Hu Yun in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at Singapore Open Super Series 2012
Malaysia’s Wei Feng Chong continued his winning streak and secured a spot in Men’s Singles quarter-final as he tamed the higher ranked Hu Yun of Hong Kong in round-of-16 at the Li Ning Singapore Open Super Series 2012 in Singapore, on Thursday, June 21.
The young Wei Feng, who has been positioned at number 37 in Men’s Singles world rankings, showed his class when he toppled the World Number 20 Yun in a phenomenal manner.
The in-form Wei Feng, who defeated Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat in the first round, continued his roll-coaster run in the following round against Yun by winning the battle in straight games with a comprehensive difference on the board.
On the other hand, the higher ranked Yun failed to play competitive badminton as he committer many errors on crucial stages in the match and lost to his lower ranked Malaysian opponent in a lopsided fashion.
The in-form Wei Feng showed his aggression in the court as he played in a commanding way and took an early lead without showing any mercy to his rival.
In the meanwhile, the Hong Kong shuttler could not do much with the power play of the Malaysian and remained trailing at 7-11 until the mid-game interval in the first game.
After the one-minute break, the higher ranked Yun geared up his speed and also remained positive in the court which helped him to level the score at 17-17.
But again, Wei Feng took over the control and scored four straight points to grab the set with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the following set, it was Wei Feng who played at his best as he did not let Yun to even put up strong resistance. Until the break, the Malaysian was sailing ahead of the Hong Kong player at 11-6.
After the break, the in-form Wei Feng was calm and collected in the court as he was in commanding position and easily bagged the second game with a 21-14 score on the board.
Wei Feng won this straight set battle in an authoritative manner with a comprehensive margin of 21-17 and 21-14.
