Wei Yin Chen helps Baltimore Orioles secure narrow 2-1 win against Boston Red Sox – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles secured a narrow 2-1 win against Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, June 6 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Buck Showalter will be extremely pleased with the Orioles’ record seventh straight win at Fenway Park. Rookie left hander Wei Yin Chen also proved just what he is capable of.
For the first time this season, Chen was given the responsibility to handle things on his own and he responded brilliantly, allowing just seven hits in seven innings to help Baltimore prevail in a nail biting encounter.
The way Chen handled his nerves under pressure is a clear indication of his ability to perform in critical situations. With second and third base loaded, the Red Sox had an excellent chance to level score in the seventh but Chen
stepped on to the mound and struck out Mike Aviles and Marlon Byrd to escape the jam.
"He'd pitched too effectively not to let him decide his own fate," Showalter said.
"I really appreciate that Buck trusted me," Chen said through a translator. "That's the key point."
"Everybody's doing a little part for the team," Chavez said. "As a team, we are playing pretty good even though we have a lot of injuries. We're playing good. We're focused and we're fighting and all together. That's very important."
"I learned a lot from him tonight," Chen said of Josh Beckett. "I haven't had a win in a long time. It was a relief to me."
Without a shadow of a doubt, Chen possesses great throwing skills. If Showalter can show a little bit more faith in him, he can put together his career best season this year. The Orioles, who denied Boston’s post season chances
last year, have won 12 out of their last meetings.
Eric Chavez, who had three hits in the opening game, grounded into fielder choice to second in the sixth to score the tie breaking run. Mike Aviles scored the only run for the Red Sox, thanks to a sacrifice fly hit to right that
came in the third inning.
