Wei Yin Chen stars in Baltimore Orioles 6-0 win over Minnesota Twins – MLB Spring Training Recap
Wei-Yin Chen looked in commanding form as Baltimore Orioles crushed Minnesota Twins 6-0 at the Ed Smith Stadium, Sarasota Florida on Wednesday March, 7 in their Grapefruit League clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Sessions.
The Orioles started the game very aggressively to put immense pressure on their opponents. Their hitters made the Twins’ pitchers pay heavily for their unforced errors. Chen made the most of available opportunities to help the Orioles secure a comfortable win
The guy displayed some high quality pitching skills in Japan the last four seasons. With each passing game, he is improving his throwing technique significantly. Pitching two scoreless innings on his second MLB appearance, he played a key role in Orioles’ 6-0 win over Minnesota Twins.
Striking out Brian Dinkelman, Sean Burroughs and Ben Revere in the second innings, he showed that he has a strong throwing arm. The starter signed a three $11.3 million contract with the Orioles earlier this year and he has been working hard since then to get accustomed to the size of ball and mound in Major League Baseball.
He made his Spring Training debut on Saturday, March 3, throwing 31 pitches to five batters. The pitcher will be looking to maintain his good form throughout this season to secure a permanent place on Orioles’ pitching rotation.
"I think the most important thing is the Twins' batters don't know me. That's why I can strike out three guys in a row," Chen said through a translator. "The last time I don't feel comfortable on the mound. But today, I adjusted a lot and I felt comfortable throwing the ball to Matt.”
"I'm still a human being. I'm still nervous the first time. This time I felt much better because this was the second time I was on the mound," he added.
The left hander is still a bit nervous as eighty per cent of his pitches were fastball. He will be surely looking to build his confidence to try his sliders and curve balls. The Orioles have looked in decent touch since the start of Spring Training Sessions. It will be interesting to see if they can carry their form into the regular season.
