I am about to start sparring right now. I weight 138 and probably going to fight in the 141 amateur weight class.

My trainer said I can compete in a month or two. What weight gloves would I need for punching the heavy bag, sparring and for fights. I know that 154 and down gloves weigh less.

Is it 16 ounces for sparring?

and is it 10 ounces for amateur fights?

and 8 ounces for pro fights?

  1. 16 oz is definitly for sparring amature is either 12 or 10 oz depending on weight and pro is either 10 or 8 depending on weight

  2. as for what gloves you will fight with that you can ask your trainer b/c he will know. as for training it is good to have both large and small gloves. get the 16 ounce bag gloves and the thin ones that gloves your hand more like a regular glove. sometimes you need the large gloves in training to work on endurance and the small ones to work on speed. as for sparing use whatever size you will fight with and for that you'll just need to ask your trainer.

  3. You should use 16 oz gloves for sparring & use a pair of 12 oz gloves for bag work as well as mitt work. Based on your weight you will be using 12 oz gloves for your fights as an amateur & 10 oz if & when you turn pro. Train hard & good luck on your 1st fight i am sure your excited.....
