Carbon nanotubes have been proposed as a novel way to store hydrogen safely and compactly in a solid form at room temperature and pressure. Several researchers have reported synthesizing nanotubes containing 1% to 8% by weight of hydrogen. One group claimed that certain graphite nanofibers can store hydrogen at levels exceeding 50 wt%, but others are skeptical.

What is the weight % hydrogen in common liquids and solids such as Ethanol (C2H5OH), Methane (CH4), Water (H2O), Glucose (C6H12O6)

  1. % H in ethanol = ( 1.008 x 6) x 100 / 46.068 = 13.1

    % H in methane = ( 1.008 x 4) x 100 / 16.043 = 25.1

    % H in water = ( 1.008 x 2) x 100 / 18.02 = 2.02

    % H in glucose = ( 1.008 x 12) x 100 / 180 = 6.72
