Weight restrictions in football?

My team is a 12-15 league you can't turn 16 during 2008. The weight limit is 140 but it goes up 2 lbs every other week. Do you think that is a little low because kids are getting bigger. Give your opinion

  1. Yeah, I do.  I coach little league football...and for our 11-12 year old league, if you're over 140 you can't touch the football and can't play linebacker or defensive back.  Have to be a down lineman.  But you can still play being over that weight and that's for 11-12 year olds.  The 13-14 year old league there are no weight restrictions at all.  I think that's low though....some people have their growth spurts earlier than others...so I don't think there should be a weight limit on 15 year olds playing football.

  2. The problem is that if you have really big kids out there, the risk of injury goes up dramatically.  Especially in a youth league where there are smaller kids who just haven't hit their growth spurts yet.

If you are on a 12-15 team then you should be playing Frosh or Jr. High ball anyway where there are no limits.

  3. If you become significantly larger than 140, then you should try out as a freshman on the the varsity team.
