Question:

Weightlifting for MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?

I have been lifting for about 7 months now so I don't consider myself a beginner anymore. I am looking for some stuff that I could be doing in the gym that is more geared toward strength that would translate into MMA though. I train in MMA and have done so for about 2 years now. I would love to pursue a fighting career at some point but I have a ways to go skill wise before that happens. Since I started lifting I have seen a huge increase in my striking power but I am looking for some exercises/lifts that I could do that would translate into the strength I need for the sport. Please, only serious advice.

  1. Power cleans and power snatches are great for explosive strength and will really help when shooting for the take down or going for a grapple. If you can also train squat cleans and squat snatches, that would be excellent too.

For striking, upperbody plyometrics are huge if you want to gain strength and explosiveness. Exercises such as compound lifts incorperated into explosive training will help striking(punches and kicks).

skip to about 4 minutes into the vid; some crazy training man.  All that stuff is supposed to help condition the body for grappling, specifically, throwing efficiency.
