    dont sell yourself short

  2. No dear, it is a lovely name. Lots of people have had it, long ago. (See below.)

A rock and roll star named Frank Zappa named his two children "Dweezil" and "Moon Unit". Those were wierd. Your parents doomed you to a lifetime of saying "No, it is A-M-A, not A-N-N-A", but that is their right.

As soon as you go off to college you can tell everyone to call you "Anne" or "Sandy" or "Elizabeth", no matter what it says on your driver's license. People who give their children unusual names should expect this.

I have a friend whose grandfather was saddled with "Lewellyn". This was in the hard, dry plains of west Texs in the 1930's. Lucky for him, he was big. When he went into the army they had to do his chest X-ray in two sections, left and right. From the 2nd grade on you called him "Luke" or got your face rubbed into the sand, unless you were a teacher. His teachers called him "Luke" out of compassion.

    If you go to

and enter "Ama" in the first name, then check "Use exact spelling", you will find lots of Amas who were in the US, UK and Canada in 1880 and 1881. The site brings up just the first 50 in each country, so I can't give you an exact figure.

You might poke round there. Click on one Ama, then click on "Household view". You can tell things about the family, long dead, if you look at the fields and think about it; where they came from, where they moved to, what they did for a living.

    Here is one Ama:

"NA" in the race means "Native American". The fact that the 80-year old is named "Old Woman" means either the census taker got his information from a neighbor, who didn't know her name, or the mother-in-law didn't want to give her real name to the man from the government or they called her "Old woman" the way some families call sisters "Sissy".

    Here is another:

    Source Information:

Census Place Smith River, Del Norte, California

Eliza there, the wife,  was married to a Mr. Rice at least from 1860 (birth of R. Adda) until 1874 (birth of Ama). They lived in Illinois. (You can tell that by the children's birth places.) Mr. Rice was from Missouri. (children's father's BP). He probably died, since divorce or desertion were rare back then. Eliza married Mr. E. S. Brooks of Georgia sometime between 1874 (Ama again) and 1878 (birth of Flora). She and the family are in Northern California in 1880. Did they come out before or after the marriage? Good question. Every time you find an answer in genealogy, you get a couple more questions.
