Weird diffrent colored sand?

I went to this park that had this lake and i was digging the sand of the lake. As i was digging i found green sand under the regular sand then under the layer of green sand there was blue sand and under that gray and under that the regular sand that was at the top.What is wrong with this sand?

  1. Typically color is caused by the presence of secondary elements, iron being the most common, and secondary minerals.  Orange, red or brownish sand has iron oxides, green sand has reduced iron.  Never seen blue sand although I have seen blue clay.  Gray sand is probably the most common color in the underground, sometimes it is greeish gray, sometimes green, sometimes mottled gray and brown or orange.  the gray is usually due to a mix of silt and clay in with the sand.


  2. sand can be a lot of different colors depending on the sourse.  Hawii has a green sand beach due to the color.  They blue and grey may have trace amounts of K-feldspar in it.

  4. nothing wrong. sand comes in all different colors. you are actually lucky, i would kill to have color sand. =]
