Question:

Weird football scoring/starting league drafting strategy

I'm in a league that is a little tricky. We start the following

QB

QB

RB

RB

WR

WR

TE

RB/WR

WR/TE

K

DEF

DEF

and only 4 bench players.

It's going to be either a 10 or 12 team league. Last year had very strange scoring (very TD heavy), but this year is standard with the exception of passing TD's are worth 5.

My draft strategy last year was A) get really drunk and B) Draft RB's who would get lots of TD's. By successfully completing A), the next day I found out I only drafted 1 QB and 1 DEF, but I had 6 RB's on my roster, which didn't make my life easy. I managed to play smart in free agency and win the league.

Anyway, I'm regrouping my drafting strategy for this year. A) will still happen, but I'm wondering if I should draft QB's and Defenses earlier. Last year, 4 QB's were gone by the end of round 2, and then 3 more went in the 3rd round, and that was with 10 people. Defenses didn't go until the 7th, but I'm actually thinking about grabbing at least one earlier as it was a pain for me last season because I had weak D's.

Any drafting strategy suggestions? Having 2 good qb's would be a luxury, but are they worth two really early (for a QB) picks? Also, where would you look to start drafting D's?

  1. go with your gut and get the 2 best RB's with your first 2 picks.  then with your 2nd and 3rd picks get the 2 best WR's available.  with picks 5 & 6 take the best QB then TE or DEF available.  picks 7 & 8 go QB & RB.  Picks 9 & 10 go DEF/WR.  picks 11 & 12 fill the rest of your starting roster. once your starting roster is filled then fill your bench with value players.  if you're lucky you'll get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd pick...you can take Tomlinson, Westbrook, or Peterson...use these guys as trade bait.  I worked a trade where I got Gore, Colston, and Roethlisberger for basically Adrain Peterson, Jay Cutler, Patrick Crayton, and Ricky Williams.

  2. Running backs win Fantasy Football leagues. Plain and simple. Then WR then QBs. Every year i see guys make the mistake of taking TE's Tony Gonzalez/ Gates in the 2nd or 3rd round. Or Worse a kicker in the 4th round. Load up on a good RB and WR combination and a solid QB in the first 5 rounds then concentrate on the rest of your team. You may also want to draft specific looking ahead to your 'bye' weeks. Lets say you draft Tomlinson and Portis and one of their bye weeks are say the 5th week. You may want to see if maybe a Fred Taylor, or Frank Gore, Maroney, Mendenhall type player is available in the later rounds to fill in for that week.Just make sure their BYE isnt the same week!  Same with your WR and QB. The other positions like TE, K, and Def  you can fill during the year. If you draft strong enough at RB and WR usually your pretty formidable and also have alot of trade offers later in the year when injuries start to occur. Its all about tilting the odds in your favor by thinking ahead

  3. Hmmm.

I kind of hate leagues like this, but let me take a stab at it.  I mean, two QB leagues are a train-wreck, and there's no reason to have two flex spots.  I would probably drink like a rock-star too.

With a tiny bench, this league won't test your skill as a manager as much as it is a matter of surviving sheer attrition.

    1. You probably should reach for one top QB early if possible.  Even at 5 points for passing TDs, that still trumps the top backs.  Romo/Brady/Brees/Manning, are all capable of 30+ TDs.  You load up on prospect backs like you did last year.  A guy like Ray Rice could be gold, yet had for a 15th rounder...

    2. Defenses, if it is not a DST... are still a c**p shoot.  If you ask me, the 7th is a bit early.  I would try not to reach higher than that, as you have a ton of position slots to fill.  A DEF like Indy, though unheralded will go much later and has real value.  You might pair a strength of schedule table with the top offenses from 2007, and see who pops up.  It's ideal to get a defense from a team with a potent offense.  9 of the top 10 last year met that criteria in a fantasy scoring context.

    3. You might try downloading the Draft Dominator (free version) from Footballguys.com.  Plug in these funky settings, and see what pukes out.  If it's not a PPR league, you are still best served stockpiling RBs.

Not exactly arcane wisdom here, but that program will let you do your own mock drafts...

  4. QB, WR, RB, RB RB, QB, WR QB RB...would be my start and try not to take any position bye week report.  K and D doesnt really matter.

The obvious kicker is that there are not enough QBs and RBs to go around.

If you want to try a similar league....Check out Sheephead Players  ID 306876  password Queen drafting tomorrow night at 7:30, we need players.

  5. If Tom Brady is available in Round 1 take him, then 2 rbs, then fill your roster

IF he isn't, rb first round, good qb second, then fill your roster

EDIT- I don't draft a defense til round 13 (out of 16) in most drafts. If the opportunity arrives to get an apparent "steal" on defense earlier, with say, San Diego or Minnesota, take them by round 10 if they're available
