I just bought a 2.5 gallon tank and was wondering what are some creative types of creatures to place in it...anything but fish. Could anyone tell me of weird cool animals to place in the tank like freshwater crab species, or snails, or frogs, shrimps maybe, anything along those lines that is an unusual pet. Please help.

  1. i would get some brime shrimp or " sea monkeys"  they get  to like  one and a half inches and eat yeast mixed with water and you can get food coloring of your choice and the sea monkeys will grow up to be that color

  2. Well, there is no freshwater crab that stays small enough to be in there. You could have 2 small crayfish, but nothing else.

Or you could have 4 african dwarf frogs and a mystery snail.

    Crayfish care- http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Live%20Food,...

    Dwarf frog care-http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwa...

    Mystery snail care-http://www.applesnail.net/content/care.p...

But make sure you do not put the crayfish with anything, they will eat it! They can eat a snail and a dwarf frog, so if you get them do not put them with anything else.

  3. you can get like 2 ghost shrimp, 1-2 upside down catfish, and 1 snail.

-I know you said no fish but its pretty cool and you can buy these unusual pets at petsmart. I would recomend getting 2 upside down catfish if you have a 5 gallon tank that you don't use.

other recomendations are.... (keep them by there own species =0).

    -2 mini crabs

    -2 hermit crabs

    -tryclops eggs

    -crickets

-toads or wild toads less than 3 inches

-frogs or wild frogs but make sure the frogs you catch in the wild don't have bright colors to prevent getting poisoned.

  4. Sure.

Freshwater Clams are cool.  They will filter feed.

There are a plethora of freshwater shrimp that you can get from Ghost Shrimp to Amano Shrimp to Cherry Shrimp to Wood Shrimp.  All of which are very cool.  Do some research fist though.

Kuhli Loaches are fish, but they look like little eels and they dig in the dirt.  A 2.5 is a bit too small for them though.

Hillsteam loaches are cool too and they stick to the walls, but again that tank is super small.

Snails are cool, but some of them can just take over your tank if you're not careful.

Fiddler craps are pretty sweet, but again with your tank size.

There are freshwater Lobster and crayfish that would be good in slightly larger tank.

You could try some of the Dward African Frogs, but even they may outgrow your tank.

Newts and frogs are all a bit too big for that tank.

Scorpions and Terantulas may work in there.

    Hermit Crabs would be okay

  5. how about blood worms and water fleas, they are sold in small bags as live food for fish in most aqarium shops.

or you can buy "sea monkey" eggs which are the eggs of a shrimp like creature, the eggs hatch in a day or two and they are quite easy to care for.

  6. blue mystery snails and apple snails

  7. I used to have a millipede in a tank that size.  It was interesting, but smelled a bit musty (they have stinky defense mechanisms).

    Still - very cool pet.

try this wesite on the left there are all sorts of unique aquatic pets.

  9. Most crayfish or freshwater crabs need more room than 2.5 gallons.  However, you could keep a mystery snail or some ghost shrimp or red cherry shrimp in a tank that size.  I think snails are very cool.  I used to think snails were pretty boring until I got one and watched it for a while.  They are actually quite fascinating little creatures.  They find the most creative ways to get around for a little critter with only a single foot and a big shell to drag around.  When they are up near the surface of the water you can hand feed them, too.  You just put a little food on your finger and hold it close to the snail's mouth and hold very still and it will l**k it off.  The snail's toothy little tongue feels like a tiny kitten's tongue rasping at your fingertip.  I fed mine little bits of dill weed, which are very high in calcium and help snails grow strong shells.

Shrimp are very cool critters as well.  They can't be hand fed but it's amazing to watch their many little back legs flutter as they motor around the tank and the way they do things with their long front legs.  Ghost shrimp are practically see through, so when they eat you can watch the food go into their mouths and right into the shrimp's bodies.  I find it fascinating to watch a shrimp wrangle a bloodworm.  They love eating those things but they are almost as big as the shrimp is!
