I know that this rarely happens but, if my house were to be struck by lightning would my turtle get electrocuted? She's a water turtle and in an aquarium and I want to make sure that she wouldn't be hurt. So any help would be great.

  1. umm this is a funny question, if you have a roof on your house then your turtle is fine. lol

  2. ya this is no way u can electrocute your turtle, unless u had  metal rod sticking out side >.>

so i recommend plugging all the stuff u have on to a surge protector. i use this brand and its great.

  3. She could because the wiring going to the pump for the aquarium could possible carry the voltage from a lightning strike... plugging the pump and other things for your aquarium into a surge protector would help.

  4. Your turtle should be fine. Houses have electrical circuitry all over, and all the lightning wants to do is find the quickest way to the ground. It is most likely that if your house is hit, the electrical charge would simply travel down the side of your house.

If you want to err on the side of caution, hook any filter/aerator.electrical device that is in your turtle's aquarium up to a surge protector. If it protects computers, it'll protect your turtle.

  5. well im Pretty sure it would if its plugged in to a wall so just to be safe i would un plug the tank when a lighting storm comes

  6. Plug all her lights/heat/etc. cords into a surge protector.  It's designed to kick off the path from it to the equipment when a surge hits.  She won't get fried, but your equipment might!

Just being in her tank; she will be okay.  You might see electrical flickers on metal spigots, etc., but it won't shoot into her tank, if that's your fear.

I've experienced a lightning strike twice.  All my water creatures were fine (though spooked for several days afterwards).  It's a loud experience, and very bright!

I hope this has been helpful.

  7. lol not if u own a roof >.>

  8. Animals in water, whether humans, turtles or fish, are not hurt by electricity in water- the ocean and lakes are struck all the time and things do not die massively.

The deal is that the swimming animal is not grounded- not touching anything to draw electricity through them. If they are touching a metal rod in the ground, a plumbing pipe, etc., then they may be at high risk, but not while not grounded.

Now- there is a problem with heat. If a small body of water is hit- tank, pond, etc., it could heat the water up dangerously.

Bottom line- turtle and fish are pretty safe. Worry about the animals touching the ground first.
