Question:

Weird spots in my pool please help!?

Hey, recently I have been cleaning my pool and I've discovered weird white/yellowish spots and stains on the walls and floors. I've also noticed brown stains as well. I presume that the white and yellow ones might be calcium, but I'm not quite sure about the brown ones. They look like dust/dirt and they won't come off. Excuse this sentence, but the brown spots seem to be the color of fresh dog f***s. Anyways, could you guys help me identify my problem and give me a quick and easy way to resolve it? (I'd prefer easy over quick, I have TONS of AP homework and I wanna keep my high GPA >.<)

  1. Make sure that your filter is not clogged. There could be a small block in a line or the motor.

  2. You don't say if the pool is inground, or above ground or whether it is a liner or gunite/cement.

I'll assume it is gunite/cement inground:

    1. Could be black algea. the white yellow spots could be yellow mold/aglea or calcium as you assume. If it is black mold you need to get some of the black mold remover - it has metal ions which interact and kill the mold. You can try brushing, but it usually comes back.

    2. If could be rust leaching from a rebar under the gunite. If the gunite is old - it is a possibility. If you can scrape it with your finger, it's probably not rust.

    You can prevent this:

    A: Adjust chlorine

B: Balance the pool pH (Baking soda works well and it is cheap) and alkalinity.

    C: Condition - add algecide.

    pretty simple.

    Happy swimming!

  3. white/yellowish stains can also be bleach stains. is your chlorine in balance? the brown stains, I agree, could be rust, but can also be a fungus. check to make sure that your chemical balance in the pool is correct. clean the stains off as best you can by hand using (preferably) a non-bleach cleaner.
