Nomar- He does everything 5 times—5 toe taps, 5 bat back and fourth on shoulders, 5 practice swings, 5 adjustments of the straps on his gloves (and wears # 5 of course…)-- IT TAKES LIKE 5 MINUTES!!!

Sheffield's violent bat twitch is pretty crazy, too

  1. josh hamilton bounces

  2. its probably his lucky number i do the same thing with the number 8

  3. Coco Crisp flutters his top hand on the bat while standing at the plate. you really dont see alot of that

Ichiro always pulls his front sleeve up a little bit and points the bat towards the pitcher before every swing

those are the only two i can think of now

  4. Nomar's is the best! Duane "the Human Rain Delay" Kuiper took a long time.  Joe Morgan and the chicken wing thing. Willie Stargell would windmill his bat one, two, three times before evrey pitch. I can remember Jeff Bagwell being miked for a game and you could hear the squeek squeek of his leather batting gloves as he milked the bat awaiting the pitch.

edit - eric, Mark "The Bird" Fidrych talked to the ball on the mound. Free spirit for sure...

  5. I'm with you on the Nomar thing - I know some players have little batting quirks, but he tops the list.

  6. Coco Crisp of the Red Sox moves his fingers on his upper hand on the bat like crazy! He always does it and it looks really funny, but it works for him.

  7. This isn't really a quirk, but I don't know how Aaron Rowand stays standing while he's batting.  His feet are in a perfect line like a ballet dancer's would be and his back is perfectly straight and he sort of leans back a little.  I always wondered how he didn't fall over backwards.

  8. Carlos Gomez - He smells his bat before he goes up to bat. I think it's a sort of thing that the twins had last year called Smell 'Em. He smells if the bat has a hit in it.

  9. me too - uh yeah

  10. Duane Kuiper back in his days with the Indians 1974-1981 would go through an entire routine each time before stepping into the batters box. To this day, I have not seen anyone with as long a quirck as he had.....it was fun to watch.

Don't forget Joe Morgan in his playing days, he had that elbow flap thing going.

  11. Ian Kinsler does this wierd thing.. he like does something with his shoulder before every pitch look adnd youll see what im talking about

  12. i used to love when Jim Leyritz did the bat spin after every pitch.

  13. yeh but thts probably lucky so i cant argue

  14. Nosemar Garciaparra, who was known as "Twitchy" by some.

Coco Crisp has a weird routine (and a weird stance too).

  15. red sox - Kevin You- cant spell rest of name

    hes dancing at the plate

red sox - coco crisp he twists he whole head it looks weird

thats all i cant think of

    GO YANKEES!

  16. ichiro b/cuz he always moves his right sleeve and he runs up the line when he swings

  17. Currently can't think of anything too weird.

But Mark Fidrych back in the day was a pitcher for the Tigers and he would always cover up the hole on the mound that the opposing pitcher used and wiped away cleat marks. He also talked to himself after every pitch and never used the same ball if he gave up a hit.

  18. Baseball players are a notoriously superstitious bunch, for some reason. Many of their legends and beliefs were assembled by Kevin Kerrane and Richard Grossinger in Baseball Diamonds: Tales, Traces Visions and Voodoo from a Native American Rite, published in 1980. Included here are poems, stories, interviews, drawings photographs and other materials.

jason giambi wears a golden thong for good luck on need to win games, and he also shares the thong with teammates

  19. cardinals shumaker......after every single pitch whether he swings, hits the ball, or just stands there....he redoes the straps on his gloves....everytime like clockwork lol  its like he has ocd.  the new york mets also have a batter that does it lol weird

  20. Even though he's no longer in the big leagues, Jeff Larish has possibly the strangest quirk. He stands perfectly still, upright, until he swings. Edgar Renteria also has a strange little thing where he makes the bat twitch almost rhythmically while tapping his front foot to that rhythm
