If i buy a welding machine, i won't have to buy any extra tools will I?

I want to get into welding really bad, but i have yet to try.

Will I be able to just plug it into the wall and go at it, or will i ever have to buy power supplies, or extra peaces, etc.

  1. You can go pick up a small stick machine at walmart (if they still sell them) those will plug into a wall outlet.  But you will have to go buy the welding rods, saftey glasses, gloves (rated for welding) and most importantly the helmet (not to mention the cost of materials).  Of course theres mig also which is some what easier but is a more expensive machine to purchase and maintain.  You don't need a license or anything to buy any of this but as ladybug said the best way to learn is to take classes.

  2. If you want to get into welding the best thing to do is take a class on it and get certified. You will need a lot of tools. My bf does welding for a job and he hates it cuz u get so dirty and the stuff gets in ur lungs and makes you so sick. He is constantly having to buy new parts for the tools that he uses and spends about 50 bucks a month on welding gloves, coats, and arm covers.....so I suggest taking a class first to make sure u dont waste ur money.

  3. Why not attend a training class. The machine and materials would be free or of little cost to use if you attend an adult education program. In that way you will see if you enjoy doing that kind of work with only a basic investment of time and money.

  4. There are 3 type sof welding machines.

    tig

    mig

    arc

Tig is is great for thin metal

mig is good for mid size it's hard to do sheet metal with a tig

arc is good for thick metal

    Price range

    tig$$$

    mig$$

    arc$

A mig machine would be the best for someone learning. You can get a cheap mig that uses a flux core welding wire. This is the cheapest and doesn't require any type of gas. If you get one with a bottle you can use normal wire but it costs more but it's easier and looks better.

Arc is very cheap to start off with . You can get a arc welder for 80 bucks new. They're only good for thick material. They say you can do 1/16 but that is really hard to do with a cheap arc welder. 1/8+ is more realistic.

    You're going to need a welding helmet,gloves, and wire/rods.

They have 110 welding machines and they have larger 220 machines. The 110 you can plug in about anywhere. Just make sure you dont live in a old house that doesnt have a 10amp+ breaker.

Guy below me has a good idea you could take welding 101 at a alocal community college or take a art welding class  When a art welding class you can weld anything you want and have fun :) Welding 101 you have to do book work :P
