Well Spelled notches victory in the Jersey Shore Stakes on 14th July, 2012
Trained by Benjamin W. Perkins, it was none other than his charge, Well Spelled, who landed a victory in the Grade 3 Jersey Shore Stakes at Monmouth Park on 14th July, 2012, where he rode under the command of rider, Pablo Fragoso.
The duo stole the show with their swift pace and completed the six furlong race in 1 minute and 11.17 seconds, 1 ½ lengths before the Jane Cibelli trained,  Cape Cod Canal, whereas the third place was secured by Marcus J. Vitali’s charge, Scaramagna,
who finished half-length behind the runner-up.
With this victory, the colt achieved his first graded victory and got a huge chunk of the $100,000 purse.
The son of Spellbinder, out of mare Well, took the lead as soon as the gates opened but, Fragoso took control and settled him in the back, behind pacesetter, Rass Stone, who completed the first quarter mile in 22.52 seconds and half-mile in 46.08 seconds.
Cape Cod Canal, under rider Elvis Trujillo, led briefly but, Well Spelled took the lead after the eighth pole and maintained it until he broke through the wire first.
The winning rider Pablo Fragoso was pleased with the performance of the runner and discussed his racing strategy in these words:
"When the gates opened, he popped out on top, so I just waited for the speed to pass me. I didn't mind coming with a wide run; the rail has not been the place to be today. He came closing with his run down the outside and wore that other horse down.
I was real impressed with him today."
The winning trainer was equally delighted with the three-year-old’s effort, and the fact that the runner practiced here before seemed to work in his favour as he stated:
“With the way the track's been playing and the fact he's been training over it, we thought that would help him a lot and it did. He ran hard. It took him a while to get the right style of running, and now that he's got that, it definitely helped him."
The Kentucky bred runner has now three victories to his name in nine starts and has earnings of $161,740.
