I've been horseback riding for about 5 months now. I'm 16..

I just started to canter. I still need to work out my legs and stuff. I ride every Saturday (i can only go once a week for now) for about 45 minutes. I'm with two other people, and they are really good. The two teens that work there are pretty good and always do stuff for me. I hate it. I really want to be good.

If i contuine going with i be good? I really want to start jumping but thats not for awhile.

thanks alot

  1. if your taking lessons it sounds like you need a new trainer, you should be riding with people on your level, also, i cantered in my FIRST lesson, at 6 years old.

    practice practice practice

my friend started taking lessons two years before i did but she lives in a subdivision and only could go once a week. although i started lessons 2 years later than her and actually only took them for three years (every now and then i'll have a tune up even being world champion, you just forget things and it helps to be reminded what your doing wrong) while she took them for five. although she thinks shes a better rider shes not, she took lessons once a week for an hour. i had those lessons plus i could rive EVERYDAY for an hour or two, my instructor loved me because if she told me to fix something at a lesson it would be fixed by the next one

riding everyday is key, it really helps to live on the farm with a horse of your own and have unlimited acess to it

now so far i've layed a terrible picture for you, here's the good

in time, you'll get better, it'll just take alot longer to get better

    good luck to you

  2. Yes you will just give it time.

Don't ever give up, if it's something you love.

Just practice and try your best.

  3. Yes practice good luck

  4. just keep practicing but remember practice doesn't make perfect perfect practice makes perfect

  5. yes you will get better. everyone has to start somewhere. I started riding when I was about 4 and luckily I got to ride every day. but practice makes perfect. my dad always said sweat and wet saddle blankets makes champions. I have had a few. I won over 500 firsts in one summer. so dont be hard on urself. practice and have fun!!

  6. Try not to compete with the other riders in your lesson! Ask your instructor to point out your strengths so you know where you are doing well!

On the days when you're not riding, use your imagination to play with it! Watch videos of good riders, if you can, and imagine that it's you on the horse. What does their body feel like to you? How would you feel? Can you feel your heels down? Can you feel the horse's rhythm? Can you feel how good it feels? Can you imagine yourself riding, looking up to your next turn, and feel like the horse is just reading your mind? It's okay to play and pretend like this! It will actually help you next time you ride!

You can also practice at home... Stand with the balls of your feet on a step with your heels stretched, about shoulder width apart. Use a handrail, just for balance, don't grip. As you stand there, press your belly button up against your spine, and notice how your hips feel. Breathe and look straight ahead, as if you are riding. Pretend you are on a horse while you do this...

Take a couple of breaths, pull your belly in, and now bend your knees, slowly. Pay attention to where your hips need to go to keep your balance so you don't tip backwards! Let your hips spread out wide as you bend your knees, keep your heels down. Notice how your knees and ankles feel. Notice which muscles you are using. Make sure you are breathing!!

And, beginning all the way down in your heels, straighten your legs and stand back up! Use your gluts (your butt muscles) to bring your hips back up underneath you. Keep your belly in and your eyes up. Practice bending, straightening, bending, straightening. Just a few times at first. Don't push it. Remember to pretend you are riding when you do this!

You will not only be building your strength, you will be creating more body awareness by doing these fun exercises while staying aware of your body!

Riding is all about body awareness and communication. The better you know your own body, and as you relax and breathe, you'll be more available to follow the rhythms and movement of the horse, and you'll be more available to communicate effectively through your body!

Remember to breathe!!! And have fun! Save the competition for a show ring, and watch your fellow lesson-mates to learn what you do and don't want to do in your own riding.

Be in love with horses and have fun!!!

  7. YES!! you cant expect to be as good as everyone else if you have been for only half a year! (even though i know that is not what you are thinking lol) You will get good eventually. It just takes time. It is good that you are in a lesson with more experienced girls becuase you will lear from them and their mistakes. Make sure you LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR COACH IS TELLING THEM! because that will help you later on! good luck!

DOC BAR: why the h**l are you letting people who have never ridden before canter on the first day??!! Are you even a certified coach??!! Gawd!

  8. Practice is perfect! just keep learning and dont worry about the other people. Beause soon enoph you will be feeling more secure in the tack and you will find your leg will get stronger. Flat work is the strongest foundation if you have good flat work then jumping will be a breeze to learn good luck and keep it up !

  9. of course you will if you practice

if you dont like that those girls do everything for you next time they try too tel them that you would like to try to do it yourself and that if you need help you will be sure to ask

  10. Practice makes perfect..of course you'll get better try not to worry

  11. Of course! As long as you work hard and try, you should get good.  5 months is very soon to begin to canter.  If you went to a lesson every week, that's only about 20 lessons, whichisn'tt much.  just keep trying and make sure you master the canter and are confident before you jump.  Don't rush it or you'll never get good.  Good luck!

  12. I am in the same situation as you! but i am going to be patient. i wish i was really good too! haha you will have to tell me about how your process is going after a while. i would love to talk about horses with you! Good luck and stay safe!

  13. i remember feeling the exact same way.

the first year or so you feel like a complete idiot, but you have to start somewhere. you cant just hop on a horse and expect to be perfect.

youve stuck with it longer that most beginners i know, so be proud of yourself for that. and if you continue riding, im sure youll be as good as those girls within a year or so.

    good luck

    :)

  14. Practice makes perfect. :) you'll be great if you don't quit!

  15. of course! lol we all have to start in the same place...we ALL start out really bad but its importiant to remember QUALITY over Quantity...riding isnt like volleyball or basketball it takes years to be "good" and also remember that being good is not how good ur equitation is its how well you can get ur horse to preform so therefore u must understand WHY  ahorse does the things they do so even if u only ride once a week...READ during the week and just continue to set goals for yourself every lesson and do wat it takes(in reason)to accomplish them...and you will be good...ive been riding for 4 years and i am now just thinking of myself as "good"....lol =]]

    keep it up!

  16. Yes you will get better that is a very nice pace that you are moving at right now if you don't want other people to o stuff for you ask them how and why they are doing it and ask if you can try

    Good Luck! :-)

  17. It takes a really long time, keep at it. Ask the barn person if you can help out by mucking stalls or grooming horses in exchange for another lesson

  18. Keep doing what you are doing maybe you can go twice a week get there a little faster. If jumping is what you want to do

  19. yes any1 can get good at something if they really want to and tell me do you want this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  20. yeah u will get good. I have been riding for 7 years and started jumping two years ago. u have a while now but you will get there. You have to have good legs and balannce and know how tt controll a horse

  21. Riding require patience, so if you enjoy it I would suggest you sticking with it. I have been riding awhile and I am still learning new things and have those frustrating lessons sometimes. Don't worry- you will notice your leg becoming stronger and soon everything will seem much easier. Good Luck!

  22. U WILL SOOO BE GOOD... IM 13 AND HAVE BEEN RIDING FOR 7 YEARS. I SPEND EVERYDAY AT THE BARNAND GOT A PONY. I OUTGREW SUGAR (MY PONY) AND GOT A NEW HORSE (GLORY). IT JUST TAKES TIME TO LEARN HOW TO BE A GOOD RIDER. SO DON'T GIVE UP. START GOING OUT MAYBE 2 OR 3 TIMES A WEEK FOR EXTRA PRACTICE

  23. Holy s**z, you only started cantering after 5 months?!!?

Are you doing English? Do Western.

Also, i'd get a new traine rif it's been 5 months. I've had my friends come over and me train them and had them canter on the first day.

  24. Just stay with it. Im in my 50s and still getting better. Sometimes I feel like Im spinning my wheels and then we have a break through and boy what a good feeling. You set goals and work toward them. Maybe you could work for lessons or just private time to work on something. Last night, we worked on moving off my right leg. Left legt, she moved right off, right leg was like her side was dead. All of a sudden she side passed over and I don't know who was prouder, the horse or me.

  25. yes with practice you will excel at riding. Im 14 and ive been riding for online 4 years and im comepting at training level eventing. Most of my friends have been riding for 10/12 years and were at the same level. I rode a lot and worked hard to improve my riding. So with time you will get better. Good luck jumping!! and i think that you should be able to start jumping soon if your cantering. Not hight though but you should be able to do crossrails and stuff.
