Cheney wants to build 130,000 more power plants wich will lower co2 emissions but also raises the risk for an "accident" like chernobyl. its funny how we blame our people for not changing but honestly i believe its our government. we have been lied to for many years and that puts us in the hole even more because its my generation who knows nothing .. im 15 most of my friends know nothing about global warming. how can we change the world if we dont even know the truth?

its my generations world that is being altered and we are the ones who will see the up rise or the fall. But when your 15 16 or 17 global warming prob. isnt on the like list for topics to talk about. but it needs to be it is important that we know and it needs to be understood that all this is going on. most people and kids dont even know the dien out of honey bees which will lose us 1/3 of fruits and pollunated goods. is it my future that will have "fake" fruits. what about my american land. if our poles are melting which they are and water moves in will my house be swept under water? because i live on the coast it will. where will i go? and even worse i live within 20miles of TWO power plants. if there is an "accident" that they forget to tell us again what will happen to me? will i lose everything as i know it? most likely. its a scary thought but it is the truth.

More power plants means less cost for energy. Don't worry about Chernobyl. The Soviet Union kept their nations and people under their control and could care less about safety.  

By the way, Global Warming is the biggest scam. Scientists have disproved it. If the world is warming up, then why did we have record snowfalls, and one of the coldest winters?

In fact, the temperature of the earth has gone down 2 degrees. The gov't won't tell you that. They just want to get more money out of you because "green" items cost more than what is around now. I am sure you know about the law debate that is in Congress over banning regular light bulbs and making energy efficient ones the only kind to be sold. And those energy efficient bulbs give off less light than the regular light bulb.

The government is brainwashing people and a lot of people are victims to it.

130,000??, Really?? It would only take about 500 nuclear plants to provide all the electricity that our country uses.

There are only about 60 of them now and they provide approximately 10 % of our needs.

Nuclear power produces no emissions and has never caused a fatality in the U.S. to date. So far it is the safest form of power we have ever produced in this country.

I understand the fear of nuclear accidents like Chernobyl, but you have to put it in perspective.  Chernobyl was in the former Soviet Union, and it was not kept under good watch.  If we build more nuclear power plants, we will monitor them better than Chernobyl was.  Also, keep in mind that on an average year, coal and oil causes thousands of more deaths than nuclear power does.

This unfounded fear of a "chernobyl" type accident never ceases to amaze me. If you would do any research, you would know that such an accident is easily preventable, and it was the dumb soviet oversight that lead to the "meltdown." They made some major mistakes by skipping out on a few fail safes--ones our plants legally must have, and a few extras.

If we really want to curb carbon emissions sooner rather than later, then we have to go large scale nuclear. It is by far our best alternative.

Many nations in Europe, like France for example, get up to 80% of their power from nuclear plants.

Any fate you can think of that can happen to you is probably more likely than a nuclear accident.

I'm glad to see someone so young actually interested in the world, but never forgot to always put things in perspective.

I think you're worrying too much about nuclear, on several accounts:

1.  No way is the world going to build 130,000 nuclear powerplants.  The whole USA only has a bit over 100, and the new-design plants are substantially bigger than the old ones.

2.  Chernobyl's disaster was caused by the (mis)design of the Soviet RMBK reactor, which was (a) moderated by graphite (which burns like charcoal), (b) had what's called a "positive reactivity coefficient" which allowed the power level to rise exponentially if it was operated wrong, and (c) didn't have a containment building.  The combination allowed the idiot operators to get it to generate a huge steam explosion, the explosion to dump hot nuclear fuel into the graphite and light it on fire, and the lack of containment to spread the consequences far and wide.

This kind of accident is literally impossible in US reactors.  Three Mile Island partially melted its core, and couldn't even damage the bottom of the reactor vessel.  Modern designs don't allow the kind of operator errors which caused TMI.

If you are worried about risks, worry about drunk-driving illegal aliens.  They are a much greater danger to you over the next 10 years than powerplants.
