  1. Hi Erica,

I think the most important thing to start with is to get your baby into a good sleep routine.  I had massive problems with getting my 5 month old son to sleep.  He would just lie awake and cry for hours, then when he finally went to sleep he would wake every hour or two hours through the night and cry again!  Talk about pulling our hair out .... we were absolutely desperate for sleep!

It was a baby sleep audio program recommended by a friend that finally saved us. We followed the advice and began by creating a baby sleep routine which included bathtime, dimming of the lights, putting Josh into his crib, final nappy change and then lullabies. We also made recommended changes to his naps during the day and used some of the other recommended techniques. Within two weeks he was sleeping through the night most nights with just the odd night where he would just wake once!

If you want to take a look, the audio program is at http://www.babysleepsolution.com

Definitely start by creating a good baby sleep routine though and you could find that solves most of your baby sleep problems.

    Good luck!

  2. How old is your baby?  My son did this for the first couple of weeks, and he finally started getting better when I started trying to keep him up for a little longer between sleeps during the day (newborns sleep a lot, but I would keep him up for 1 1/2-2 hours during the day).  They do get straightened out--I promise he won't do it forever.  It's tough being a brand new baby (and mom!). :)

  3. Babies spend 9 months inside their mothers, being rocked to sleep while Mom goes about her day, and playing while Mom is resting.  Now baby is here, and baby's routine is supposed to change - except noone told baby.

It does depend on how old your baby is.  If it's a very new baby, then they need to eat frequently, so they are going to be up at night - a lot. New babies need to eat somewhere between 8 and 12 times a day.  The key is to make sure you wake baby for meals during the day.  Don't let them miss meals because they are napping, otherwise they will have to make them up at night.  New babies can't go any longer than four (five at the very most) hours without a meal, so they will have to eat at night.  But, the good news is, they will hopefully go right back to sleep after they eat (well, mine did, anyway).

When they are a little older, you can try playing with them more during the day, so they will sleep more at night.  Babies do have their days and nights mixed up, and they will have to learn when they should be sleeping and when they should be playing.  You can help your baby with this by actively playing with him/her during the day.  Then, when they wake up at night, it's all business.  When you go to get baby, try not to turn on any bright lights, and don't play with baby - no matter how much you want to - it's diaper change and meal and right back to sleep.

I know it's hard, but eventually, baby will sleep through the night.  For now, just try to rest when baby is resting - this will help you get through this trying time.  One last thing - for a small baby, "sleeping through the night" means baby slept about five hours.  Though some babies start sleeping the whole night through when they are very small, I think most babies continue to need to get up a time or two during the night to eat.  My daughter (almost 9 months old) got up in the middle of the night - not every night - but most nights at least once (for a diaper change and a meal) until she was about 6 1/2 months old, just to give you a time-frame.  But every baby is different.  I really feel for you, having just finished that journey myself.  Eventually, your baby will sleep through the night, and then you can too.  Until then, try to enjoy your time cuddling and bonding with your baby during those early morning encounters.  I know it sounds cliche, but when they are grown, you really will look back on these times and they will be some of your most treasured memories.  Congratulations, and good luck.  :)
