ok i have a Samsung mini DV cam what format is it and can movie maker edit it ?

ALL consumer miniDV tape camcorders record in DV or HDV (if high definition video) format. In order to get the video from the camcorder to the computer, you need to connect the camcorder's DV port to the firewire port on your computer. USB will not work.

Once the firewire port is operational on the computer, connect with a firewire cable (not included in the box with the camcorder). With the camcorder in "Play" mode MovieMaker "Captures" the video.

You do not need any camera-specific drivers (like USB always needs). Once you get the firewire400 (IEEE1494a. i.Link - all the same thing) port working, then Capture or import the video form the camcorder.

Yes, MovieMaker can import and edit DV (not HDV, though).
