Northern Districts require 373 more runs for victory against Wellington on the final day of their Plunket Shield match being played at the Cobham Oval, Whangarei in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamish-Marshall-c1525 and James Marshall started the third day for Northern Districts on 142 runs for the loss of three wickets. However, the start to the day wasn’t ideal for the hosts, as Hamish got out on his overnight score of 60 runs. His dismissal triggered
a batting collapse for the team, as wickets started to tumble.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Marshall-c1650 also failed to respond
under pressure, as he gave his wicket away after scoring 45 runs. A cameo of 35 runs off 39 balls from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Trent-Boult-c2708 helped the team reach 235 runs before they were all-out.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cameron-Merchant-c1216 and Stephen Murdoch provided
their team with a solid opening partnership of 71 runs.
Merchant was the first man to be dismissed after scoring 39 runs. He was unfortunate to be run-out after getting off to a good start. However, the innings was carried on by Grant Elliot and Murdoch. The pair put together a 112-run stand for the second wicket
and took their team’s total to 183. Elliot played aggressive cricket, scoring 65 runs from just 68 balls, before getting out. However, he provided enough support to the opener, who amassed a brilliant century for his team.
Wellington declared their innings on 212 runs, with an overall lead of 383. The highlight of the innings was a terrific century by Murdoch. He scored an unbeaten 104 runs which included 14 fours. Brent Arnel was the lone wicket-taker for his team today,
taking three wickets in the innings.
Northern Districts had to come out to bat for a few overs before the close of the third day’s play. The team opened the innings with their regular openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brad-Wilson-c1187 and Bradley Watling, and the pair survived the three overs bowled in the day. However,
it will be a tough challenge for the batsmen to chase the target posted by the Wellington batsmen. They will need a quick start in the first session of play in order to challenge their opponents for a win.
On the other hand, Wellington will be looking forward to picking up some quick wickets in the first session, and putting Northern Districts on the back foot.
